Pulling timing what does that mean? Tuner said the car wasn't spark knocking but it was pulling timing?

The PCM can alter ignition timing(when the spark plug fires in relation to the combustion cycle) based on many things within the tune as well as corrections for fuel and other parameters. When the PCM is pulling timing it means it is detecting knock whether it be from poor fuel to ghost knock such as from a bad exhaust leak or something else.

Honestly these are questions to be asking your tuner directly.

Pulling timing refers to a reduction/delay in the spark plug being ignited. Usually from low octane fuel, knock, running rich, boosted applications, etc. It reduces the power of the car and helps prevent detonation or harm to the engine.

Oh ok. He said I probably got bad gas. Yeah I asked him, I just want to see what other people thought about it. He said he wasn't getting any spark knock but it was pulling timing. Cant be an exhaust leak haven't changed exhaust yet. But is it possible for the car to pull timing out without spark knock is the question I think im trying to ask lol

Timing can also be pulled on how its commanded in the tune.

If you look at Spark and Spark v2 on a datalog, that will show you what it's actual seeing and what it was commanded to see.

Should I be worried? Im thinking about running the gas out putting some different gas in and put it back on the dyno

If it were bad gas you'd very likely see some knock sensor activity. There are a number of things that can pull timing, but the most frequently seen are knock sensor, temp and torque mgt.

But, as mentioned, talk directly with your calibrator and have them lay it out for you.

it's all based on what the cars seeing in the fuel, all cars will add or pull based on what it's seeing

Im running the roush phase 1 on my car and I've Wondered if my tune on my car would pull timing based on the torque management sensors. I swear sometimes my car seems much spunkier than others but I could be just getting used to the extra power. I feel if I ease into the throttle the car feels much stronger than if I just slam it to the floor.

Hope that tune shows up soon Beef, wanting to see how the throttle response changes.

That's probably heat.

I live in Texas so your probably right.

So are you saying the car is pulling timing because of the heat or just FI cars just battle heat in general and that is the performance difference?
I'm a fan of your kits and I'm sure you have some suggestions to keep that heat in check.

High IAT (Intake Air Temps) will lower octane, which increases knock, which then causes the ECU to pull timing. Or any combination of the above.

Supercharges with superior cooling and recovery will be more consistent pull to pull.

Consider running higher octane fuel in heat or running meth injection to cool the charge or act as secondary fuel. Or beef up your cooling ability.
