I have a 2016 PP Ecoboost with nav and sync 1.0 and am trying to follow the instructions on the ford website to upgrade to 3.0. I have my usb set to exFAT and have downloaded all the necessary files. However when plugging the usb into the car, I do get the "Upgrading system software" notification, but it never stops. The instructions say it takes 30 minutes. I left it going for 90 minutes with multiple attempts with the same results. Has anyone came across this issue? I called my local ford dealership and they basically said the website is wrong and I have to go to them because they use an SD card and will charge me $250, which I believe to be a joke when the actual ford website says I can do it myself for free. Thoughts?

I had similar issue when trying to update mine. DO NOT take it to ford, they are clueless and will just try to gauge you for $$. Below I linked a thread I made on another forum detailing my headache through all this, and the 2nd link is what actually helped me fix it. Let me know if you need any help I spent about a week messing with this update it was a pain in the butt

I remember this issue Iiirc. Split up the files, and only install like half of them at a time. Non Nav right?

Correct, will install in 3 parts. Worked for my ‘16 non-nav SYNC 3 v1.0 to 3.0

Thanks so much I will have a look at these. Do you know if it will work with Nav?

I am unsure if it will work with nav, but it’s worth a shot. The update Ford sent out is such garbage there have been so many issues with it. Another thing to try is to go buy a brand new USB 2.0 for like $5, my old usb I had lying around didnt work to well.

It’ll work with nav but obviously you’ll have a couple extra files. I asked if ur non nav because us non nav guys have less storage space and run into these issues More.

Also, remember that going from 1.0 to 3.0 is a huge leap... it might take much longer than the web site says... just leave it in there and take a long drive.... couple hours....

Maps are not included, that is a separate update and yes it will cost.... about 100-150 depending... https://syncnavigation.com/ford/home

I disagree, I don’t think it should take hours for this update to install. When I got my brand new USB and used the method of splitting the install up into three parts, it took maybe 15 minutes total for mine to update. I would say maximum 30 minutes to 1 hour from what others have said, but more than that is too long and it probably isn’t working still if it’s taking that long.

version change doesnt matter. I can go from 1.0 to 20.5 and the time to install depends solely on the file size of the new version (20.5) because it overwrites the old data (technically some stuff may be the same and it isnt overwritten but its not important to this discussion). There isnt some progression system where it goes to something like 1.0 -> 1.2 -> 1.4 -> 2.2 -> 3.0.
Map update can be obtained free if you have the file already. Unofficial so no Ford support you can follow this:
https://cyanlabs.net/tutorials/update-ford-sync-3-2-2-3-0-to-version-3-4-all-years-3-4-19200/
1 Usb is all you need. And if you follow this I bet you wouldnt even run into the issues you are going to 3.0.

@lizardrko Look at the link above if you want to update to 3.4 from 1.0. this should be more painless than editing the config file. Though I do warn you, its an unofficial method of updating so if something screws up Ford may not warranty it.
I've updated myself and so have many other Ford users.

Yes, going the way that is unofficial is good... but as you said, any issues along the way and you brick your unit Ford won't help.... and going to 3.4 means not going back to 3.0 because it reformats the unit
That all being said, I have yet to see any one tell of any issues, but that does not mean it won't happen.

I went to 3.4 long before that page was out there... I'm at 200xx, and hope a newer one gets released soon as it's VERY buggy.... 192xx is stable
To the OP, if your unit will not update, it is possible that you have a bad installer, OR, your APIM has issues...

One extra thing to note, don't use a USB3.0 drive, a USB2.0 works better.... some can use the 3.0, but 2.0 seems to be more stable

Interesting Cyanlabs tells you to use a USB 3.0 stick because it works better!

I would also suggest trying many different avenues before coming to the solution that your APIM is broken. Don’t waste your time calling ford support or taking to dealership, they are literally clueless and have no troubleshooting skills. My SYNC system was completely fine just wouldn’t accept the update, so they said it was busted and wanted me to pay $1,100 for a new one. Then I got a new USB drive for $5 and followed the article I linked above and installed in 15 minutes and it’s working perfectly. Still pissed at Ford for trying to gauge me like that.

Thanks all, I was looking at the steps about doing a split install and as I do have the Navigation, the install is not already split up into 2. The file shows one big install so it does not say how to split that up exactly. I am familiar with coding so the syntax is not an issue, it is just since it is given as one big install, I dont see a way to break it up. I am not a big fan of the unofficial update as I do not want to brick my system
