Tank 2 w/93oct: 322.5mi @ 14.7 gallons= 21.9mpg this was me really trying for fuel economy, no WOT runs nothing! Shifting 1-4-6 majority of the time, 70/30 mix between highway and "city". I am a bit disappointed in those numbers as I thought they would be better than my first tank which included test drives and a few WOT runs here and there, and it still came out to be the same at the end. What seems to really kill MPG are start ups and driving short distances. Before I filled up the computer was sitting at 24mpg, but I ran a few errands around town during my lunch break at work and by the time i got back the computer was reading 22mpg.

NOTE: I am NOT disappointed with the number in compression to the performance of the car just to what the first tank netted me with some "fun" driving thrown in.

Honestly, I think 22mpg is not so bad for this kind of car.

No, not bad at all. I came from a Mazda Speed 3 that was rated at 18/25 city/hwy and I was pulling 27mpg with the same route, granted I only have 700mi on the car, but I thought for sure I would get 23-24mpg avg on this last tank. This is with 3.55 gears staying at 60mph on the highway.

Others have posted 24-25 mpg avg with 3.55 gears so I figured anything down near 21-22 would be with 3.73. My commute is 80% highway so I would expect at around 25 mpg avg at 70 mph with 3.31 gears.

I have a 13 and averaged 16-17. 3.73 gears. I know they're different years, but powertrain is pretty much the same.

Which is what I was hoping for.

Yeah. I'm not expecting great mpg out of a 5.0L performance car, but I am expecting it to get near the EPA highway number if driven reasonably (most N/A engines do) as a daily driver.

MPG:
If your car is well tuned to optimize efficiency, the higher fuel energy content, the better mpg you should get.

Here are some energy content values:

Base gasoline: 114K BTU/gallon
Summer gasoline: 114.5K BTU/gal
Winter gasoline: 112.5K BTU/gal
10% MBTE ('oxygenated gasohol'): 112K BTU/gal
E85 Ethanol: 81.8K BTU/gal
E100 Ethanol: 56.8K BTU/gal
Diesel: 129.5K BTU/gal
Average Bio-Diesel: about 120K BTU/gal

So the higher the BTU rating the better MPG you should expect. Of course, other factors are involved including engine efficiency/transmission efficiency/gearing/wheel efficiency/oil viscosity and ambient temperature (Summer/Winter) and driving habits.

By the way, Octane is NOT a measure of energy quantity but rather a indication of combustion efficiency. A car designed for 87 Octane gasoline won't necessarily get better mpg if you switch to 91-93 Octane.
The engine may run more smoothly but not get better mileage per se...tho' many people swear by it. My trusted mechanic says to buy the lowest octane the engine is designed for (as long as the engine
runs smoothly)...you're just throwing away money buying octane higher than your engine needs.

By the way my new TY GT supposedly runs best on 93 Octane but here in Central Minnesota, the highest octane available is normally 91. All I can do is rely on the engine computer to adjust for lower than optimum octane.

My 2014 Flex-Fuel truck yields MPG values close to the percentage comparisons (about 20-30% decrease when I switched from summer gas to E85)
So I check the price versus energy rating to determine my best mpg per dollar. In my home town, E85 is about 10% more expensive than summer gas. So there is no way I am going to fill with E85 and take a 30-35% price increase per mile.

Do we know when they switch to "winter" and "summer" gas? How about quality gas stations? I usually try to fill up at Shell, when I filled up yesterday I used Sunoco.

Summer/Winter switch...

Here in Minnesota the switch is usually October and April. I can usually tell the difference if the weather holds the same for a couple of weeks.

Has anyone messed with their shift points? What I normally try to do is accelerate up to 2.5k-2.75k RPM and skip shift to 4th then at about 35-45mph shift to 6th when cursing around town. Once you go to 6th the real time fuel gauge really spikes, other than that it always seems pretty low even if im in a higher gear at lower speeds.

The switch depends on where you live since it is based on ambient temperatures and is needed to make sure gasoline has the right amount of volatility to start your engine when it's cold. As for quality of gas, contrary to what most people believe, different gas stations don't have different gasoline, the difference is in the amount of ethanol and type of additives placed in the gas. Also, just because you go to a Shell gas station, doesn't mean you're buying Shell gas. It could be BP gas that just had the additives Shell uses added to it. The brand and quality of gas you receive is dictated by location, not company you purchase from. It's interesting especially when you consider how people attempted to boycott BP gas stations after the Gulf of Mexico spill thinking it would affect BP, when in reality it only hurt the gas station owners since BP still sold their gas to Shell, Exxon, Marathon, etc. branded gas stations.

Do we know when they switch to "winter" and "summer" gas? How about quality gas stations? I usually try to fill up at Shell, when I filled up yesterday I used Sunoco.
