Mines an auto and I get the same thing. Goes away once the engine warms up. I'm pretty sure it did it when stock as well.

Mine does this also, reminds me of the old carburetor days. Runs fine once warmed up. First I have felt since driving fuel injected cars. Mine did it stock and with a Lund tune. Hate it but guess it is the nature of this beast.

Clutch feels very grabby when cold, more difficult to modulate, and thus, worse driveability. The engine also seems to be a little surgey when cold too. Goes away after just a little bit of driving, though.
That's probably a better way to describe it Bmac. It feels like its slipping to me since I feel it start to grab and then let got a bit, rinse repeat a couple times. Either way, it makes for some jerkiness until warm.

As prevalent as this is, i'm surprised no one has been able to definitively say what the cause is, or if there is something that can be done to lessen or get rid of it. Has anyone ever talked with a tuner about this....is it something they acknowledge exists?

Pretty sure it's cold hardware and not much you're gonna be able to do about it. Clutch bites different when cold, engine has more friction, etc.

When cold the dead zone of the gas pedal feels bigger seems like.

Mine jerks hard into second gear. Is this common? Doesnt really do it in any other gears just 2nd.

1-2-3 are all jumpy for me when cold but second feels the worst. Probably because I tend to short shift first to keep the RPM low and roll into the throttle heavier in second. Which it will usually pull for a moment then throw me forward in the seat when it hesitates, then will start pulling again.

All sounds like what I've been experiencing. Makes me feel better that I'm not the only one and it seems to be normal-ish.

VVT runs off oil pressure. Cold oil means higher oil pressure. Most likely the cause. Mine does it as well, but once oil temp is in the "green" it is fine. The clutch stuff sounds like something in the tune. My Subaru was the same way, but dialing back the "rev hang/clutch protection" eliminated the issue.

Mine has this drivability issue as well. From the first day (5 miles on the odometer with stock tune) to current (5K and lund tune) it does it till the oil temp reaches the 'green', from then on it settles out. Did it worse (surging) when I first got the lund tune but they cleaned it up a bit after a data log from cold start till warmed up.
There are other posts here on 6G about this over the past year but it is just how it is till it warms up a bit. CAT temps, IAT, ECT, oil temp plus others all feed it the brain and it tries to make it work but does so a bit poorly till its warmed up a bit.

I'd buy the VVT theory if other coyote vehicles were similarly effected. My 5.0 F150 is every bit as smooth when it's dead cold as it is once warm. I have no firsthand experience but I've heard the s197 5.0 cars weren't effected either. I could be way off but it sure feels like poor fueling in the tune.

2012 GT with FRPP tune, manual trans, 94k miles (yes I know, not a 6G)... Mine does this too, but only occasionally... It's my opinion that this is might not be tuner specific... been tuned for all but the first 12k miles, and the description of others here are the same as mine...

Not sure what it is, but the issue is obviously not specific to the 6G 'Stang.

Another here... Mines is herky jerky until it gets up to operating temps. I wonder if someone could use an oil pan heater to test the cold oil theory? Leave the car sitting overnight with the oil heater on. It could at least identify or rule out the VVT if the VVT is actuated by the oil pressure.

If it doesn't go away then it would likely be a clutch system issue or fuel. (Pending VVT is oil pressure dependent)
