I have to admit that I am surprised with the lack of durability of the clear coat and paint. Every time I wash my car, with clean microfiber cloths, bucket and water, I find a new scratch after I dry the car.

In addition, this morning, after washed and drove the car last night, I went out today and noticed that something whiteish had sprayed on the right side of my hood and roof. I didn’t notice it yesterday. I washed the car yesterday and drove around town and on the freeway. So someone had something spraying out.

The result, after I washed the spray off, is the edges of the spots etched in my paint. When the sun hits the hood just right, the spray pattern is fully visible.

I really question the durability of modern paint. Paint from cars even a generation ago was way more durable.

Do any of you know a safe rubbing compound or other polish that might get watermark like spots out?

With the paint and clearcoat as thin as it is, i’m hesitant to just try any old polish I find at autozone.

Thanks,

Thanks, I will mention it to the owner of the local ford dealer. He’s a great guy and I think he would see the paint issue fairly. He knows me and my car, so maybe something can be done. Perhaps the clear is too thin, or was left off, lol.

Meguiars 205 and a DA polisher should fix it up.

Call and thank the EPA, they're why your paint and all paint of atleast the last 10 or 20yrs chips so easily.
YES! I had a 1997 Ranger that I daily drove more than 100 miles each day year around to and from college. This includes snowy and icy days where there was a ton of gravel put on the roads. I could count the number of rock chips on the frontend of that truck with two hands after 125,000 miles in three years of driving. The frontend of my Mustang looks like a warzone with limited winter driving even after the first 10,000 miles. I have just given up now, 45,000 miles in.

Yeah, it seems if you don’t wrap the front end of the car when new, you are too late to keep the paint looking good. I got a quote a month ago and decided against it. Now I regret it.

On my R8; the whole car is wrapped. I didn’t want to deal with matte paint maintenance.

The reason for paint issues: the switch from oil-based to water-based. OR.....so cheap manufacturers will tell you.

Oil-based paints dry harder and are tougher and harder to chip. However, water-based paint properly applied is just as durable. The issue is that manufacturers do not take the time to paint the car as it needs to be painted. They are trying to use the same process for water-based as oil-based, and that's why you have issues with chipping, orange peel, etc. They won't spend the time, or money, to apply enough coats evenly to make a lasting finish.

As for thanking the EPA, well, we need to do what we can for the environment guys. I've got chips in my paint from rocks etc. but if it means my little nieces and nephews have clean drinking water and a planet to live on, it is what it is. We are going to keep on saying, "Screw the planet" and "Yeah but this one little thing doesn't make a difference" until we've ruined everything. Only then will we see how near-sighted we have been.

At any rate, ALL manufacturers are required to use water-based. So before you blame the EPA, go look at a new BMW. They have the same requirements as Ford, Chevy, etc. but they take the time to do it right. It's all in how tight the bean counters want to be, and at domestic brands that is usually EXTREMELY tight.

Then why do you say the paint isn't durable?
An Unknown substance messed up your paint. Bug spay, lawn products yadda yardage...will mess up any paint. Remember when new cars had issues with rail transport? Ever see new cars wrapped in plastic on delivery?

There's a reason I got my car coated asap after custom ordering within the first week.

That was a good move. Wish I had done the same. Though the consensus here is that I just need a good polish and then a clear wrap.

thanks for the recommendations. Much appreciated.

Yes, PPF is also worth it too. Both are two wise investments if you plan to keep the car longer than just a few years.
