Paint Damage - Respray Required?

Does the paint on this car look too far gone to be fixed by a detailer and will require a respray of new paint at a body shop? It's a very low mile 2017 GT performance package that I think sat out in the sun for several years with no real maintenance done to it. Notice the white lines on the rear quarter panels and the paint discoloration.

The car is otherwise mechanically perfect, but the seller is asking top dollar for what looks like a very weathered car.

I'm not an expert but I think that's the clear coat failing and not the paint. The rear pillar damage sort of makes me think it had a car cover on it outside that shifted around on it for a long time.

The trunk edge confuses me.

Pretty big flaws imo and would cost a good bit to fix if you needed to paint. Not top dollar condition in my book.

They want $31k for the car as-is. Supposedly they will respray these areas but I think it is too risky for that amount of money.

They would do a shit job fixing it and you'd be unhappy.

The cosmetic issues + 31k for a 2017 makes this an easy pass imo.

Glad to know I'm not crazy haha. I appreciate the comment. I did end up passing on the car. There's too many clean S550s for that price (and even more awful ones for alot cheaper).

Examples like the one being discussed also have me thinking about tires, weatherstripping and interior plastics, either their current state or how well they will hold up once put back into service. What not so obvious bits will need attention after a purchase.

It may have been buffed heavily by someone with a rotary that removed a lot of clearcoat on the edges. This isn't always an immediate failure where someone burns through the paint, but can also occur overtime as the life is greatly shortened. There may be thin spots all over that car-meaning it could need an entire respray.

Yeah the car spent several years near the coast in Florida. Based on some of the issues with the weather stripping, I believe it sat outside for several years without any washes or waxes done to it.

To me it looks like someone burned through the clear using a mechanical polisher/orbiter by pressing too hard, use too aggressive of a pad, too high of a speed or sitting on the edges too long…

It's definitely possible. Regardless, the dealer said they are going to fix it by respraying it. I'm just not confident enough in the repair to buy the car.

My 2018 Royal Crimson sat outside in North Carolina. Probably it's entire life. Terrible water spotting, and pollen packed into every crevasse. I had more than one detailer tell me that color sanding and /or a respray was probable. Since this is a tinted clear, that gets expensive pretty quick. The local Team Shelby folks recommended a guy outside of Indy. I sent him a couple pictures and he said "Bring it down." He put in a 14 hour day. I was blown away by what he was able to accomplish. The paint is 95% where it should be. There are a couple of 3 to 4mm spots that were just not going to get fixed. That's fine I will DRIVE this car. In Michigan! It is GOING to get some paint defects!!

I do respect your decision to pass on that car. Mine has turned out to be a bit of a unicorn, so investing in the paint correction made sense for me.

Funny you mention Indy, I'm from around that area.

I'm glad you were able to get your issue resolved. I think if this one was a special or rare car I would go for it, but it's just a GT with the PP. Sure it's relatively low miles at 44k, but I can't drop $31k on a shoddy paint job.

You can find one in better condition for $30-$35K.
