Just be extremely patient taking it off, no damage. WD40 works good, some heat, gently use soft plastic scrapers is about as aggressive as you can get.
Adhesive remover and a LITTLE heat. Use to much heat, you will soften the paint and peel it right off. That's where most of those things go wrong is the prep/removal process using bad techniques. If you can get something thin under it I usually use floss since it's waxy and saw away. It takes patience because you will constantly break it but that's good because you don't want something TOO harsh or abrasive.
