I was behind a truck the other day that had tails so dark I could barely tell when he hit the brakes. Changed lanes as soon as possible. I do have my backup light tinted and my fog lights smoked but those are used much less. In fact I may never turn the fogs on because I usually drive it in fair weather. The backup light is so low who would see it anyway?

Case closed. A responsible tint does not adversely effect the visibility of the brake lights. Next.
And it's against the law! Done .....done:cheers:

Side marker tints or Blackouts.... Responsibly done....but illegal!

People want to have a badass street looking car...DUH.

Hence the murdered out looking car that looks mean...Have you not asked yourself why people plastidip the badges and emblems?...To get that look that is stealth...LOL

I guess with all the bullshit aside...It would be as good as someone asking you why you need to have an aftermarket exhaust on your car?

I think this looks good...

Keep in mind that the camera exaggerates the blacks...Camera tricks. Not my car but I bet if you saw it in person on the road, you would see the brake lights when lit up.

Not illegal. Illinois state law:
(625 ILCS 5/12-208) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-208)
Sec. 12-208. Signal lamps and signal devices.
(a) Every vehicle other than an antique vehicle displaying an antique plate or an expanded-use antique vehicle displaying expanded-use antique vehicle plates operated in this State shall be equipped with a stop lamp or lamps on the rear of the vehicle which shall display a red or amber light visible from a distance of not less than 500 feet to the rear in normal sunlight and which shall be actuated upon application of the service (foot) brake, and which may but need not be incorporated with other rear lamps. During times when lighted lamps are not required, an antique vehicle or an expanded-use antique vehicle may be equipped with a stop lamp or lamps on the rear of such vehicle of the same type originally installed by the manufacturer as original equipment and in working order. However, at all other times, except as provided in subsection (a-1), such antique vehicle or expanded-use antique vehicle must be equipped with stop lamps meeting the requirements of Section 12-208 of this Act.
In Illinois you can tint your brake lights all you want as long as they are visible from 500 feet. Don't be a shit house lawyer.

it's same tint in the pic above that one man... the butt end of that car lights up bright red on the brakes almost exactly like stock.

it's the idiots who paint or plastidip the tails that are stupid.

For me, I am not as concerned about someone seeing me at night but more so during the early morning or late afternoon sun where the sun is shining in your eyes. I want whoever is behind me to know what I am doing. IF Ray Charles was alive and in a car behind me, I would want him to see my brake lights. I just added the CDC light bar to my vert, now lets talk about bright!

Golf clap for the runs with sizzles crowd. I personally don't care about the super cool Rickycardo types with their tint. They die oh well, no big loss. They did things their way in the endless persuit of trying to look cool. Darwinism is a wonderful thing! I'm more concerned with some poor old lady or a housewife with a minivan full of small children plowing into the cool kids living on the edge. The majority of states have Head/Tail light tint laws in effect for a reason :headbonk:We can now officially lump this gem of a thread in with the auto vs manual or I4 vs V8 threads.:D

I don't see any way tinted brake lights couldn't be seen clearly. The stock brake lights are truly blinding. Here's mine with the lighter tint from the Anchor Room. As side from that I'm a responsible adult and perfectly capable of enjoying my dangerous freedom. Therefore I will tint my lights, add a tuner, drive on summer tires and be just fine. You guys do what you want.
Your example photos are not real world and are poor representations. Taking a picture in a dimly lit environment right on top of the brake lights proves nothing. Glaring sun light or the sun setting hitting the back of your car with tinted brake lights can wash out visibility. There is a reason brake lights are bright. To get peoples attention and for safety. With all of the distracted drivers on the road today I want every safety advantage my car can provide. My take on tinted lights are if it affected only the drivers car go ahead. But if your actions create a hazard for other drivers because under certain conditions they impair seeing your brake lights then to do so is wrong.

Fine, for honest discussion I will photograph my car at work today from 500 feet at close to sundown and we can look at the brake lights then. I will make this experiment as accurate and as honest as possible. I firmly believe that my brake light are easily seen at the laws requirements. I will provide unbiased information tonight.
This may not sway anyone's opinion but we have ranted about this for a while without any fact-based evidence. At least then we can see the results and let our emotions cool a bit while we discuss this.
