So I changed my oil about 2500 miles ago have not really changed my driving style and the car now has about 13000 miles on her. Prior to the oil change I was using about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart of oil every 1000 miles. The car has only used 1/2 quart in 2500 miles since changing the oil.

I am not sure if the engine broke in or if the fresh oil is just making the rings seal better. The other possibility is my oil temps are cooler now since the weather has cooled off. In the summer my oil temps would run 230 to 240 now they are mostly 190 to 220 if I really beat on it.

I am wondering if the oil just gets too thin and breaks down to much when it gets hot. Regardless the oil usage has gone way down, I always change the oil between 3 and 4 thousand regardless. I have only used Motorcraft 5/50 fully synthetic and have FP catch cans on both sides.

Just found this interesting.

I see a lot lower oil consumption with fresh oil. I was seeing a pretty rapid increase in consumption when the cold weather hit, I assume due to the cold start engine tolerances being pretty loose due to the forged pistons slapping around. I changed the oil and even in the same temperatures it's stopped using oil at the rapid rate.

I was up around 6500 miles on the oil with a bunch of autocross & road trip stuff thrown on top of my normal ~20 mi/day daily commute. The oil poured out like water, it was clearly time for a change.

Yea maybe this engine just is hard on oil hence the use of 5/50 oil. Maybe others with higher oil consumption can see what happens when they change there oil.

I have always believed these engines do not have a internal issue they just run too good to have ring and cylinder wall issues. But a pattern is forming now between driving style along with oil breakdown. Maybe keep oil change intervals closer to the old days and change it every 3k.

I've seen no rhyme or reason on this topic with my R. It took 3qts between 1800-2900mi and none at any other point. First maintnenace was completed under service plan at exactly 6mos which happened to be ~4100mi. Currently at 4900mi and not a drop appears to be missing since service. Exact same driving patterns throughout...all street miles with mix of spirited backroads, highway and a bit of bumper to bumper on occasion.

Am not worried at all, will just keep checking per the manual instructions but I did want to share my experience with the members here.
