I saw these oil filter magnets for sale and Im wondering if anyone is using these? In principle, it sounds like a good idea but it seems like something that’s likely to get tossed accidentally. Also, It may set your engine up for a catastrophic failure if a ‘large’ metal chunk were to get dislodged from the magnet while riding rough. Based on the latter, Im a no. Opinions?

Just get an oil drain plug with magnetic tip.

If you got large "chunks" that you're worried about being dislodged, you already have catastrophic issues with the engine. The stuff that gets caught on there is usually metallic sludge that you wipe off.

Seems like snake oil to me. I've had several vehicles with over 200k miles and as long as you change the oil at recommended intervals gimmicks like that won't matter. Besides, short of cutting open every old filter you'll never know if it's doing anything or not.

I'm not sure what benefit there is to a filter mag. Oil filters typically remove particles down to 40 microns. I can't imagine anything smaller causing wear or damage. 40 microns is a lot smaller than bearing clearances.

Plus the filter mag is only going to trap nickel and ferrous metals. Non-magnetic particles will go right passed it.

I don't like the idea of potentially having a concentration of metal within a high-pressure item. Would this created a blockage, similar to a blood clot or cholesterol? What happens if the magnet is accidentally moved or falls off? Most filters already capture material down to 30 microns, some down to 20.

Magnetic drain plugs have been used for decades without issue. Whatever metal is there just sits until recovered.

Otherwise, use quality service parts and follow the maintenance schedule.

I have made several with neodymium magnets and believe me......NOTHING that gets caught can get dislodged.......VERY STRONG MAGNETS!!

Does it do any good.......cannot hurt anything and mine only picks up very fine ferrous metal, almost like dust and likely from cam surfaces and rings?? Probably wouldn't do any harm if circulated but I'd rather see it trapped in the filter!!

Commercial Filter Magnets are pretty expensive......my home made one was about $15.00 and it's on my Mustang filter right now.....I'll cut it open when I change the oil......stay tuned!!

If you have enough metal shavings in your oil that you need to wrap a magnet around the oil filter, you're not going to have that problem for very long.

I would not pay for a magnet but I do put hard drive magnets on my filters. I figure if the magnet on a drain plug gets a little its worth getting as much as I can with a free magnet on the filter.
