Hello,

I own a 2017 that has roughly 9k miles. Right after I changed the oil last year the engine developed an aggressive "ticking" sound after it was at operating temps and between idle an roughly 1.5 RPM. It was sometimes worse than other times. Oddly enough, if I would really run the car to read line a couple of times it would almost go away but would later come back.

A Ford field service rep declared it piston slap, changed the oil and called it good. The car still made the sound and I checked the the oil (from a sample) 400 miles later thinking there had to be damage going on. That analysis came back clean. Since then I have driven the car about 1,100 miles and the sound or its pattern has not changed. It has not consumed any oil and the previous owner told me it never consumed oil when she owned it (spoke with her after I purchased the car).

Last week I took another sample of oil out (after 1,100 miles) thinking there has to be some metal in it with this awful sound going on and this analysis came back pretty clean also. Given the fact that there is really nothing in the sample, could the engineer be correct in that this ticking sound is not harmful to the engine?

Thank you

Sounds like piston slap, and it's fairly common for GT350's. If you do a Google search, there's a Ford Service Bulletin about it that says that it doesn't affect engine longevity.

Prob a lifter/lash adjuster making noise. running it hard "pumps it up" (hydraulic) and it quiets down for awhile. Not a real issue... take it to a performance shop that knows what they're doing. Once you know, you can always have the dealer do it if you trust them...

Do you know what piston slap sounds like? If you could record it, Id be happy to lend an ear.

Edited to add: I found this on YouTube

Same sound in my friends 2017 GT350. If he wouldn't pointed to me, I wouldn't noticed. He listened in my 2019 GT350 and said there is no sound like in his. It didn't bothered me in his though. Common thing in pre MY19.

Isn't piston slap usually worse when the engine is cold? I have a bit of it when cold (sounds like the video above) and then it largely goes away when warm.

Thats how my GTO I had new in 2005 was. Especially in winter. I'd always drive slow afraid something was going to break the knock was so loud for about a block and it would go away and not return till next time it set over night. Never caused a problem. But sure sounded like it was getting ready to throw a rod. Was still doing it a few years later the exact same, no louder or less when I traded car off.
