Update: an engineer from Ford advised that the grinding while going into 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears is a "normal" characteristic of this transmission. So they are taking the position that the transmission they selected for this car is junk? Interesting.

Sometimes you have little choice. You have to select the parts available when you need them. The MT82 fits the bill. It's not perfect.

While we should all expect much better for the price we pay for the Mustang it's not going to happen. For a good transmission expect to pay at least 2k more that we have if not a lot higher.

There's a reason you pay a lot of money for BMW, Audi, Porsche, etc. They typically use better engineered parts and the package as a whole and that comes at a price.

Rachel:
... Just thought this might be something you might be able to pass along to the service dept.
Thanks for sharing, Phlyguy; I've documented this.

Man oh man...how I wish that I could answer that question. I seriously can't.

1. I haven't got my 2015 Mustang yet. Ford just moved my ED date out a month. ...
Send me a PM with your VIN or dealer code and order number, TorkN8R; I'll check your Mustang's status in my tracker. Just about everybody's ETA, or EDD, got bumped a month. It may update when your Mustang goes into transit. :)

I am new to these forums but I have some input on this as well.

I purchased my 2015 GT PP from the dealer lot on 10/26 and to date I have 1500 miles on it.

I too am noticing that there seems to be some obvious noise and vibration, almost a grinding sensation in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. Sometimes it is worse than others. In the beginning I was only as little concerned about this, simply due to the fact that I have no comparison. Its been a long time since I drive a mustang and I never drove any of the most recent models.

I also notice a lot of thumping from the rear end while shifting.

Since I have been reading other peoples experiences, I am a little more concerned about this. To me this is something that the dealer is always going to dismiss as being normal, or at least until something actually breaks and then the argument becomes whether or not it was misused or not.

I will be due for an oil change before long, I think I will ask the dealer to check it at that time.

This is so odd to keep hearing about this issue when every review I've seen they rave about how good the shifter is.

Had mine inspected today at the dealership. Everything checked out fine. However, they did document it and log that its been in for transmission noise ie.."thud/Bump" when shifting. I still believe its a drivetrain "slack" issue perhaps with the clutch even. Anyways, read somewhere else that a Ford Engineer stated its normal as well. Oh well, as long as it doesnt blow up, im good!

The problems with the MT82 gearbox are well documented as has been discussed. The Blowfish after market retention bracket appears to help as does the replacement of the gearbox lube with TSB required QDC and X-18 Friction Enhancer but all seem to be "Band-aid" fixes to what appears to be either an engineering design flaw or poor quality control from an inferior msnufacturer

Thanks very much for offering to help. I don't have a twitter account, but I do have a facebook account. However I don't use it much. I tried to figure out how to send you a PM in facebook, to send you my vin#, but couldn't figure it out.

Supposed to be QDC dual clutch transmission fluid along with x-18 friction enhancer additive as per the TSB and the current Ford/Motorcraft Transmission Lubrication Chart

So ones who are having this problem in their cars already really have no alternative to prevent it. Your only idea is maybe they forget or don't know to add the x-18?

Sorry, got confused. I thought you were saying to change to QDC W/ x-18 to prevent this issue

The shifter is improved over the last generation's configuration. The grinding sensation I've also experienced since the temperatures have dropped and the car is cold. I only notice it in the first few minutes if I attempt a quicker shift. Once it is warmed up, it shifts as normal.

I will be monitoring, of course, in the coming weeks since I only have about 600 miles right now.

I'm going to say that if your car stays outside and the cold soaks through the car, you're going to always have that issue when you first start off with the MT82. People with garages that don't quite get as cold might not notice this.

I had two MT82s in my '11. Both had this behavior. When I bought my house and kept it in the garage at night, the mornings were at least 50% improvement in initial shift feel during the first few miles.
