I am curious. I see lots of people post photos of Mustangs, but, blurr the number plate.
Any reason why? Don't people see the number plate when the car is being driven anyway?

Again, merely curious.

PS: Not 100% sure where this thread should go. But, this thread was prompted after seeing the Black Mustang S550 thread.

Some folks like to keep their privacy, I get it. I have a vanity plate that is very easy to remember so I have to behave sometimes out there on the road or risk being reported, not that there's that many red Mustangs in Cajun Country.

For the very reason that those tags can be looked up and one could make life difficult for another.

It’s the gateway to your info, (aren’t you in IT Ivan?) either way what I am unsure of is how they are looking up the information....

Yes. And, from a 'security' perspective, I understand.
However, when I think of other cars on the road, I could Google/Research any tag I feel like. Hence, why I wonder why people block their tag number(s).

Also, people post VIN numbers online all the time. You would be surprised the data that number reveals...

Of course you could research any tag on the road. But you're probably an honest person and wouldn't unless you had a reason to. On the internet we often post photos and information about some very expensive upgrades that God knows how many people see. People who may not be honest. People who could get your info and do you mischief or even try to steal your vehicle.
I know you know all that so, to answer your question, I blur my tag because why tempt fate? I'd also never post my VIN or much else of a distinctly personal nature in an open fourm. Same reason.

I don't bother with it but understand people that do take the precaution. It is overkill... or I mean more in the sense of the chances of someone looking you up and trying to steal your personal belongings, financials, etc. are pretty slim. There are much easier ways to go about hunting people down or ripping them off.

Very few people have access to look up plate info. And the odds that someone near you sees it and breaks into your house or steals your mustang because of it seems slim as well.

Let's say if something did happen, what are the chances you'd find out that was the manner of which they got to it to begin with?

Some folks just want to minimize those opportunities as much as possible. Maybe don't want people they care for to get hurt either. So... I get it.

Sometimes I blurr the plate because it’s easy to look up someone’s tag on the internet, get your address and thieves use social media and social cites to set you up or rob you.

Sometimes I forget to block it and oh well it’s out there. I recently switched to vanity plates so I guess I’m double screwed for being a show-off....

The same reason I wouldn’t make a thread saying “I’M GOING OUT OF TOWN”.

Internet forums are an easy target for scumbags looking to do no good. The more details you post, the easier it is to become a victim of a setup. Most people wouldn’t connect the dots and think it’s random. Photos you post sometimes tag your location, your plate is a direct line to your address, etc.

In reality someone could follow you home and get the same answers but it much more obvious and likely someone would be put on alert, note a vehicle description/tag, etc versus being stalked electronically.

Until a few years back, anyone could obtain anyone's name and address by using a form to request them from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Might have cost a couple of dollars. Then, that service was cancelled, and protection of personal data became much stricter. I'd be interested in knowing how, under those circumstances, someone can get my name and address with just my license plate characters. If I weren't afraid of unforeseen consequences, I'd almost be willing to challenge someone to turn "F**CK U" into dangerous name/location information.

I knew of a category of occupations that, upon individual application to Cal DMV, could have its members' information restricted from distribution. Even law enforcement requests were met with "Sorry, that record is Out Of File". How can I get into that protected group?

Risk being reported? For what exactly? Cops here would laugh if someone called in my vanity plate saying I was doing something. Unless they catch you in an act they won't to anything because its all hearsay. Now of course if they have you on video actually doing something you shouldn't then thats a different story.
