USA Number Plate Size

This may seem a strange thread to post.
I am from Sydney Australia and I am currently looking at buying a Front end cover from CJ Pony being the Colgan Custom.
I need to buy the one with the hole for the front number plate however all I can find out from CJ Pony is that the hole is made for the US size number plate however they failed to tell me the size. In Australia we have a large variety of number plates and therefore sizes. For example my front number plate with the Perspex Cover is 15 inches wide by only 3 inches high.
So I am hoping if a forum member in the US can provide me with the dimensions please. Don't want to order the cover if it wont fit around the number plate as far as the width of it.

Just measured my plate- 12 inches wide by ~6 inches high. It looks to be 6 1/16, so that could just be margin of error. Bolt holes are about 7 inches on center horizontally, ~ 4 3/4 inches on center vertically. I just happened to have my front plate in a file cabinet In Nevada US, if your car does not have a front plate mount or indent, use of the plate is optional. My dealer never puts front mounts on Mustangs

Quite a few of us Brits with S197s run American sized plates over here, albeit with our legal font/spacing etc

Thanks Dana. Wish the state governments here in Australia were forward thinking like some of the US states.
I remember 3 years ago when myself and my family were in the US on holidays we noted a different states allowing no front plate.

You're welcome ;) It can be a bit confusing, though. Sometimes you can be pulled over for them to check-I once got a citation because there were small holes where a mount could be. Some people carry their front plate and put it on the dashboard.
