2017 EB, stock everything.
I drive about 45 minutes to work, this morning air temp was about 28F.
My head temps normally stay around 187 or so, but this morning when I arrived at work, I was idling finishing a podcast (JRE!) .
I noticed my cylinder head temps went to 214f, then something happened and it dropped back to about 185f. Thinking maybe the fan kicked on?
Does that sound normal to you guys?

here is an older post (5.0, not the 2.3) but pretty much the same info.
the CHT is the coolant temp at the cylinder head if i recall, and with a 190* or so thermostat probably open at the 214* and allowed coolant to flow the the cylinder head cooling it back down to the normal ~185*.

I saw that thread about the 5.0, and didn't know if it applied to the 2.3 or not, and I couldn't really find anything else using the search.

I cant find the factory temperature setting for the 2.3's online anywhere, FordParts does show it's the same assembly part number from late 2014-2019 models.
Maybe LevittownFordParts can chime in with a specification?

That sensor is pretty much the standard across all the platforms, as I understand it.
I was more concerned about if my readings were abnormal or not .

Posting this follow up for anyone searching for the same info.
After watching the idle cycle, this behavior appears normal .I watched the CHT during a twenty minute idle this morning .
It would bump up to 216*, fans would kick on, and bring temp back down to 180*. This cycle repeated.
So the system appears to be functioning as intended.

If you have a/c on or defrost on the fan stays on so will stay around that 187 or so. turn off defrost or a/c and it will climb and go down. all is normal.

Just for the sake of it, I watched mine on the way to work this morning (53* ambient) with the a/c on and mine stayed between 187* and 194* (30%city/70%hwy)

(2018 EB 202A) My EB likes to stay around 180-190 depending on ambient temperature while cruising/daily driving. (NJ was 52 degrees last week and 10 degrees today...) When idling, the temp creeps to 214-216 normally and then the fans turn on and it cools back down quickly to normal range. The AC speeds up the cycle slightly.

A/F ratio is the number to watch. Mine will lurch under the first moderate acceleration onto a highway. CHT was climbing from 150-170 degrees. The A/F ratio dropped to 10.9-11.2. It has happened 3 separate times.
I never see those numbers even when fully warmed up and applying full throttle.

mine does that too. It's because the lower coolant flow at idle and higher head temp from driving a few minutes before(or even idling). The coolant has more time to absorb heat from the head and will cause a spike in coolant temp until it can remove all the excess heat out and/or bring in cooler coolant. Think of it as running you hand over a flame. Do it quick and you don't notice do it slow and feel the burn
