Hi, I have a Mustang GT PP 2018 and I am looking to add a tune, not much for the power but for the overall feeling when driving. ( I am always in track mode).

So I went to a mustang shop near me and they suggest me the SCT programmer they have (probably X4 I guess). When I ask what tune will they install me they said it would be the tune that comes with the programmer.

So my question is, does this means the tune will be a generic tune for any car or that the sct programmer comes with preloaded tune for many cars and they will select the one for my car? Obviously I would like to have a tune made for a Mustang GT 2018.

Hey Stephan, so the tunes that come with the X4 are just basic "dyno" proven tunes, very generic. I would recommend doing a custom tune off the bat with an RTD device from Palm Beach Dyno or Lund Racing. If you have any questions, let me know!

But is it a dyno proven tune for a mustang GT 2018 or for a generic car.

The default JLT SCT tune included was pulling 8* of timing on my '16 GT, just get a custom tune if you decide to get the SCT.

They can’t do a generic tune. It has to match the car it’s going in

I would go with a custom tune from Lund Racing or Palm Beach Dyno. You can't go wrong with either. We sell both their tunes and the RTD tuning devices here from www.lethalperformance.com. Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions.

Correct me if I am wrong but the difference between the regular tune and the custom tune is that with the custom tune, you specified what mods you have done on the car and the tune is generate accordingly. So in the case that the car is stock otherwise, I don't see the need for a custom tune. And if it is a question of Lund or PBD vs XCT, I would expect they would be better since that are close to twice the price as I see it, but I would think the XCT would do a good job.

Correct, however the power difference from an off the shelf SCT tune does not come close to the performance of a custom tune from PBD or Lund.

I suggest Unleashed Tuning or Steeda for your tuning needs, over the other 2 that everybody and their dog just defaults to.

the canned device tune is nothing to write home about. Frankly I wonder if it's even as good as Ford's OE tune. The Ford Performance tune is an option as well and fully warrantied and plenty good enough. Get a SCT device if you want to do things like get a crackle tune, or run an E85 mixture. All my new of the showroom floor vehicles got flashed within weeks of ownership to get 93oct and E30 tunes

Agreed. I would keep oem over the tunes included with the handheld. The devices should really be used to load custom tunes and to assist with logging. Not for the tunes they come with.

OP I'm actually surprised the local tuner is talking about using the canned tune vs them tuning for you. At that point there is no value added of you paying them as it would be the same if you just ordered the handheld yourself.
