Is there any point in installing a CAI that does't require a tune? Can you feel the performance difference, or it's pretty much worthless without a tune?

If not for the IAT displayed on the dash I'd be blissfully ignorant that the no-tune CAI I installed is otherwise worthless. Regarding a CAI with a tune, I think it's ridiculous to think a $350 CAI needs another $400 something in a tune to be worthwhile.

Just search CAI and tune. Tons of threads.

Which is why you just buy the tune and don't waste the $350. Unless you just really like the looks of the CAI or the added intake sound (which you can't hear if you have exhaust).

Honestly, with any modern vehicle there is nothing that you can do to it performance wise without talking to the ECM as well. There is safety logic built into all new vehicles that dictates when parameters are off within x% add or subtract y as a correction factor.

This is why if you poke around on any late-model forums you will see people complaining that their CAI only, catback only or similarly modded new vehicle feels slower than it did stock. The correction logic that the ECM employs will rob whatever it deems necessary to get within that initial x% that the ECM says is an allowable divergence from stock.

If you want a quick and easy way to slap some additional safe HP check out our Hurricane package! It has even been featured on "Car Fix TV"! It is our newest "as seen on TV" bundle. Our parts are routinely featured on shows like these, because of the reputation and record that we have of making the most safe power possible!

And shitcan the powertrain warranty in the process...you're not making any sense here.

I did the Livernois Windstorm CAI on my car first and my butt dyno liked it, at first left the sound tube hooked up but it was too loud so I installed the cap to block it off and now I like it better than stock. Looks is a big reason I did it and the bigger better filter should help the mileage if even a little over time it should pay for itself.. I did add a Livernois tune later and than really woke it up...

The stock intake system wasnot designed for performance. It is a generic design that all vehicle manufacturers use that is made with many different things in mind...noise, emissions, etc. An aftermarket brand does not have those restrictions in place and can make a CAI that is strictly for performance. Therefore you will see a gain in hp, tq, acceleration, and throttle response over the stock unit. Especially on modern cars. They respond well to just about anything you do to them. You won't be disappointed in them, whichever one you decide on. If you are, then most companies will allow you to simply return the product. I say for non-tuned versions go with Injen, Corsa, or Airaid, or Steeda (non-tuned with insert). For a tuned version go with Steeda (tuned), or JLT. PMAS is currently the hot topic but now Granatelli is on the scene with an intake that looks remarkably like PMAS's. And they're claiming something about their MAF which everyone is bashing them about but that just kinda contradicts PMAS's claims in the process. So either way, you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. Even if you just get the Airaid Modular Intake Tube and a K&N air filter you'll notice some significant gains.

Actually you will see negligible gains due to the tuning of the stock ECU. Just because the air is smoother going in does not change the calculations that the ECU makes based on the volume of air the MAF is reading. Now lower IAT's may make a difference, but your IAT's have to be so significantly different for the ECU to change what it's doing that the change is, again, negligible.

Don't believe all the marketing data companies feed you. There is a reason that every aftermarket site selling these compares stock airbox, with stock tune, to a CAI with a tune. That is the only way that you can see those 20-40 hp gains that are being touted.

I never said 20-40 hp. I think it is more like 10 which can be felt if you pay attention to your car. But everyone has an opinion. If OP gets one then he won't be disappointed. Everyone I've encountered who has installed one, 99% of them have all felt a difference either immediately or after the ECU adjusted for it. But again, everyone has an opinion on it.

I never trust a butt dyno. Maybe that comes from the 7 years in the transportation industry with truck drivers telling me and my techs that their truck was totally changed after work we did, but the actual dyno showed nothing.

you wont feel 10 hp in a 435 hp car, at all. If people think their car is faster with an intake on giving them 10 extra hp at 5 or 6k rpm its all in their head. Placebo effect. Just my opinion.

I feel that for beginners they won't be able to tell a difference. But once you gain some experience and a bit more knowledge then you'll definitely be able to notice even small differences. A lot of kids these days expect mind blowing results. Or they don't pay much attention to their car when they drive it. That is where years of experience comes in.
