That's what makes no sense. Who can afford this? Or chooses to do so?
I’m not saying I disagree, but show me where any car price has remained stagnant over the last 6-7 years (using Hack’s GT350 as the time example). Throw in the fact that the world got flipped upside down for a few years and the sticker prices just don’t surprise me. Maybe I’m the idiot and they should shock me but they just don’t.

Question is, what can you do about it? You can pass on the car, sure. And get Tesla Model 3 Performance for 40k and with much more power

You're definitely not an idiot. I realize I'm cheap and I'm old enough that age probably factors into my feelings about car prices as well. I spent quite a few years driving cars that I bought for $2500 or less. Even after 2000 I was still doing that. I might be the odd person because I don't place an extremely high value on a car being new. I'm totally fine driving a 10, 20 or even 30+ year old vehicle.

I agree all car prices are insanely high now, and wages haven't increased a corresponding amount. If I were getting 10% raises every year I might consider a more expensive vehicle. However, since what you get in a new Mustang is somewhat stagnant (the DH weighs a lot more than the Shelby and makes less power than the GT350 did) I don't see a strong reason to buy a new Mustang right now.

Having the car smell new and being equipped with a V8 is not enough to sell me is what I'm saying.

That makes sense and I get where you’re coming from. The vast majority of cars I’ve bought over the years have been used, mainly because I used to put close to 30k miles per year on my cars commuting to/from work. Just made more sense to buy used at a discounted price and run it into the ground. Now with a mix of WFH and taking the train to the office, new made more sense for me.

And totally agree that wages have not kept with inflation which probably makes todays new car prices feel much more expensive relative to the early S550’s. If wages were keeping up, I don’t think it would be as noticeable. Higher interest rates vs even 18 months ago don’t help either.

We are beginning to see and I think we’ll continue to see price corrections on most used cars (the higher end models probably not as much which is also somewhat typical ) so there will be the “normal” value proposition/discount for used vs new that hasn’t existed the last 2-3 years. And that should bring more discounts on new as well to keep those units moving. May not be a return to pre-2020 but it will feel more normal, whatever normal actually is these days

Necro post but just saw this. The thing that always confuses me on these is that these are easily found/accessed cars to match them up as closely as possible. They are not like trying to go find some niche Ferrari. How hard can it be to get a stock HP Mach 1, HP DH, and a 2SS 1LE from 18 or later and put the same tire on all of them? Most owners would probably offer it up if it meant a little bit of coin and the new tires.
