I kind of want the handheld sct instead of the ngage since I don't want to mount it on my windshield.

Is there a difference between the two like some pros and cons?

Thanks

You don't have to mount the nguage to the windshield. It's just that the size, shape, and display capabilities make it ideal for mounting.

I had mine plugged in and mounted, but eventually took it off as I found myself getting distracted by the monitors.

Ngauge means you're locked to Lund's tuning. They're very good so that's not necessarily a bad thing, though.

I want to get a Lund tune so locked to them is not a problem.

I've used a SCT tuner in the past and all I did was plug it in, load the tune and unplugged and was done with it unless I wanted to change the tune.

Is that still the case? If I just want to do that then I guess the ngauge is out of the question?

Ngauge is extremely fast when data logging and switching tunes .

You don't need to leave the ngauge plugged in. Works just like the SCT in that regard.

nGauge is the fastest programmer at loading a tune by far. It can also be mounted in an A/C vent and used to monitor almost any PID that is in the ECM. There are also multiple screens you can set up and scroll through. I have one screen for critical engine PIDs and another for general reference. All the PIDs are individually configurable to change color based on the state of the PID. For example, CHT could be white and turn red if the value exceeds a configurable threshold. Or whatever colors you want. There is even an LED spectrograph you can set up to do whatever you want. Like RPMs or Coolant Temp or Oil Temp, etc.

So, basically, if you want to load a tune and never need the tuner again, get an SCT. But, if you want to monitor PIDs and have a factory looking setup with tons of options, get the nGauge. It also loads tunes in ~3 min. compared to ~15 min. for the SCT.

Or put another way, a flip phone(SCT) vs a smart phone(nGauge).

Ngauge does not need to stay plugged in. Very common misconception. I actually made a post about this last week

Either hand held will do the job. But our ngauge is much quicker

Let me know if we can help out at all

The Ngauge can data log without a laptop which is nice as well. If I were to do it over again I would buy the ngauge.

In what cases I'd need to do a crank relearn? Or how common is that?

Apparently sct can log without a laptop as well. But, as I understand it, only one log file can be saved on the device, which makes data logging for tune revisions pretty much impossible.

you shouldn't need a crank relearn unless your pulling the engine / changine clutch, etc..

the sct can log, but only 1 file at a time, then needs to be pulled with a lap top, and the ngauge can hold as many as the sd card will hold

I think it only captures certain parameters as well.

The big colorful display on the sct x4 is awesome. You can display up to 8 parameters when data logging through the devices screen if i remember right. I uploded my Lund FF tune last week via sct x4 and thanks for the teambeefcake for the quick delivery. Tuning took about 6 minutes including saving the stock tune. It comes with crank relearn function and other goodies. You can load any kind of tune in there if you want to lets say switch in the future. Thats always a plus. N gauge would be cool if you want to sacrifice one vent and do a permanent mount. It doesnt take so much space looks like.
