I have a 2016 Gen2 that was running an 80mm (15psi) on a VMP Gen3r on 93 octane. Ran good (757rw/600tq in 96 degree temps)but when colder temps happened I can only guess the ring lands let go. Was blowing smoke out both PVCs.

Decided on a Gen3 shortblock from Modular Head Shop
11:1, Boss crank, Callies rods, ARP mains etc, Manley pistons.
Also picked up some new Gen 2 heads from Go Hyde Racing.

Doing all new timing components, ARP head studs, cometic gaskets etc. The biggest delay so far has been making sure parts are actually in stock before placing orders.

Anyone else running anything similar I'm open to advice?
Car normally runs e85 but I run 93 during the winter as I usually don't race it.
Once it is back together it'll be back on E85 (75mm) and 93 (85mm).

The temperature outside should have nothing to do with blowing smoke. Why not build the engine you have?
Are you doing boss tensioners gt350 chains mmr tensioner flip bracket?

15psi on 93 octane gasoline is too much. Unless you're at 12-13° of timing. Anything over 700whp on gasoline with stock ring gaps will eventually pop a ringland.

Oh I learned the hard way on that one. Definitely going to pulley up for 93 going forward. It made similar power in the Roush 2.3/72mm combo on E85. I knew better but pushed it anyway with the 2.65 and 93.

Hopefully my engine isn't hurt too bad when it comes out.

There's a few things to keep in mind. If a piece of piston did break off (usually does), you will usually have a bent valve or 2 in that cylinder. Also, the blower bypass can and usually will draw a few small pieces of that smashed piston up into the blower rotors through the bypass. Keep your fingers crossed for the least amount of severity.

I'd say you had a lot of fun until you popped it. Let us see the carnage once you get it taken apart.
For that kind of boost on 93 you're 2650 needed all the meth it could direct to the cylinders. I would back it down more than 5 mm unless that is 10/11 PSI. OR run a ton of water/meth

Cory S,

Is dead on. You can't run the stock motor without opening up the top compression ring with double digit boost.

Long runs will make the ring ends kiss, and then it's all over.

PM me, for any questions. I unfortunately went through this twice.....
I'm praying the blower wasn't impacted. I figured I hurt the heads which is why I ordered new ones. Were you able to get replacement rotors?

Temp outside meant it was making more boost than when I dyno'd the car. That and the fact I didn't add any octane booster that night probably didn't help either. I'm doing all stock timings components. Assuming the engine that's coming out is FUBAR I'll build it back over time. The plan was a TKM build with a Gen2 5.2 block but the price went from 6400 to over 8k due to recent price hikes. Modular Head Shop had the faster build time as well.

Both times the damage was miniscule/superficial thankfully. I have seen some really do some damage on the rotor edges though.

I just had my short block built up this time with Manley H-tuff Rods and Platinum 11:1 pistons. Under $3600.00 total between parts and machine shop labor.

If you are making 15psi it is 15psi no matter what. Now if the cooler temperature allowed you to make a couple psi more than yes that could be bad. Your octane was probably more of a problem than the temperature. Meaning if you were on e85 the extra boost probably would not hurt

I'm certain not putting more than my usual 5oz of Boostane premium in the tank that night led to my current situation

That's one way to look at it, another way is that was way to much boost for pump gas and it was only a matter of time before you popped it

Agreed! A mistake I won't make again hopefully. I'm praying the current motor is salvageable. Especially the heads/cams as finding Gen2 heads was a pain in the poop chute.
