Well that's your wants and needs. I agree that Chevy should have offered a model with a V8 without all the goodies. Comparing the base GT to a 1SS gives the mustang a price advantage and the Camaro a performance advantage.
The Mustang has a major price advantage and the Camaro has a slight performance advantage - one that I for one wouldn't even notice. I would notice the difference in my bank account though.
The Camaro weighs around 60lbs less than a loaded up premium GT, it's not that significant and I'm sure with just a few pieces Ford could easily lose that much weight. The Camaro didn't lose much weight from the Mustang, it lost a lot of weight from it's own chassis.
We don't even know the performance advantage of the SS vs base GT. My guess is it's huge on a track. But again, 8 do wish Chevy offered an SS below the 1SS. Maybe called the LSS lol.
My guess is that if I drove the two cars on different days I wouldn't be sure which one was faster around the track. I'd bet even back to back I wouldn't be sure. That's not a huge difference. Not like one of the cars is even 3% faster or something. Definitely not a 5% difference. The only seat of the pants difference a GT owner would feel is a thicker wallet.
What it really comes down to is, the camaro isn't offered with a base model. It sounds kind of odd, but that is really what's going on. Does anyone remember the base v8 camaro yesteryear….aka the z28?
Go drive an SS and GT back to back and you'll notice a clear difference in performance, especially in the low-mid range.

Your saying there isn't much of a difference in performance from a base GT with 245-18" all season tires with 4 pot front and single pot rear generic brakes on very soft suspension to a car with 245/275 performance tires on 4 pot Brembo brakes with high performance suspension that weighs less and has more power. That's just plain blind fan boy right there. So I guess all the guys with the GTPP wasted there money from what you said.:headbonk:Agree to disagree Hack. There is a pretty big difference between a non PP and SS. We have both here at the dealership. I get to drive them back to back. Big difference. I do like the non PP though. It's pretty comfortable.
Everyone knows a camaro is racecar...and as such you should be wearing driving gloves.
They don't want you to sweat too much and loose grip of the shifter due to the neck breaking performance and adrenaline rush! They put so much thought into that design. Its so ingenious:lol:
