@Silver Bullet Holy crap that looks like a bargain. Im a bit confused on the order sheet. So Xplan ended up around 42,700 and then rebate of 3750. What exactly is cash on delivery?

Im like 75% certain I should go out of state to buy my next mustang cuz damn California hurts.
$42,699.95 was what I negotiated (including the $199.95 dealer doc fee). X-plan was higher than that. The $2,952.45 cash on delivery was just my down payment (in lieu of financing that amount). The amount financed plus cash on delivery is what I paid the dealer for the car (less the $2.50 temporary license fee). Breakdown is:

$47,080.00 MSRP
$ (4,580.00) Dealer discount
$42,500.00 Negotiated vehicle price
$ (3,000.00) Ford customer cash
$ (750.00) Ford private cash
$38,750.00 Net vehicle price
$ 199.95 Dealer doc fee
$38,949.95 Total out-the-door price

The $2.50 charge is a Missouri state charge for the 30-day temporary license tag. Missouri residents pay sales tax and license/title fees at the DMV office when we get our permanent tags (within 30 days after taking delivery).

When I purchased my 2007 GT in the midst of the S197 craze, there were 100 Mustangs
in what Sunset Ford called the 'corral.' Walking the lot and cutting one out of the herd was
a blast. What is so special about 'special order' ? I got to talk to five other guys there buying
also. I got to inspect it, sit in it, drive it, rev it. There was something about that particular
car that said I am your car, look no more. For the 2017, the inventory was smaller, about 30.
Same feeling.

Special order means it is built for you by name. Either way, when you drive it home it
is your car. After one mile they are all equal. For all the 'special order' owners who feel
special because they waited xx weeks, the lot buyers came home one very proud
Mustang owner. You will never catch them in enjoyment, they are to the driver, xx weeks ahead of you.

Life is short drive all you can.

Some of us just don't want to compromise on options/colors. I'm always willing to wait to get exactly what I want. It's not like I buy a new car every few months. If I'd waited to be a "lot buyer", I'd still be waiting unless I'd have compromised on options/color. Now I have exactly what I wanted, and I've been driving it for 2 1/2 months.

Hey all just joined as I will be putting an order for a GT PP2 soon. Saw some of the other forum areas about purchasing that have some really great info (and helpful posters!) on the whole purchasing/ordering process. I intend to use either xplan or costco as my starting point to negotiate knowing the "worst" I can do is either of them. I have purchased many new cars the last 25 years or so and have never ordered one. Thought I would give it a try and get exactly what I wanted knowing I would be getting it unmolested,.

Anyway, I stumbled onto this thread and it confused the heck out of me. I understand that sometimes things don't go exactly as planned and it sucks with things like what happened to the OP, but I don't understand the negativity by some that say I would be dumb to order one. I just don't get that. Is it not logical that either ordering or buying off the lot would net some type of compromise? Maybe it is just this day and age where everything is instantaneous that people have no patience anymore. For me, it is the experience of getting exactly what I want and the journey to do so that makes it fun. Whether it takes 6 weeks or 6 months does not really matter to me. I think everyone just need to take a step back and be happy you have several choices. I dread the day of the self driving car and the 2 different colors they come. The thrill of driving for pleasure is destined to come to an end. That is what you all should really be caring about. For those of you that have your mustangs already, get out and take a drive in it and just be happy you can do so! Anyway, I look forward to sharing ideas and stories on the forums....see ya around!

Don't forget to see if someone at the dealership can place it as an Order Type X instead of the standard Order Type 1.
This will display TAG 000X000 followed by your first initial and last name on the window sticker.
Still shows 'Special Order' at the bottom.

There are lots of members on this site who aren't fortunate enough to have a dealer close at hand with 30 Mustangs on the lot. I ordered my 2018 Royal Crimson GT Premium in March, because I couldn't find one in a market of 2.5 million people. Mine is still the only RC I've seen. It's a
one year color, so if I hadn't ordered it I wouldn't have one.

For me it just made the window sticker more personal as it had my name on it.
Ahhhhhhh…...ok I get it. That is pretty cool. I will remember that when I order. Thanks!

I agree with your message. I am not critical of special order. I have special ordered two Crown Vics and one Ranger.
Why did I special order? Color (int/ext), options, packages, etc. Same reason as yours. Autos are expensive, it should
be the buyer's choice. Here is what i said that sent the thread off the rails: all three of these deliveries received transit
damage and I accepted the cars for a clause in the contract. Yes I could have said "take this car and shove it"
and demanded my deposit back and probably won. I worked with the dealer. In one case the repair was reworked twice.
I needed the cars for my business. I waited six to eight weeks, I did not let cosmetics override getting on with getting on
the road in the car i wanted.

The only point of my input, being both a Ford Special Order buyer and a Ford Lot Inventory buyer is,
the lot deliveries: [for me and no body else in America] went smother than the Special Orders.
Congratulations on your Mustang purchase, drive safe.

As I understand it, all customer factory orders show as 'special order' on the window sticker.
Mine says Special Order, as I wanted all the Tech and could only find ones without the ACC, and the deal my dealer done me to get that package was to good to not jump at it

After 16+ weeks, my dealer cannot tell me when my new car will be delivered. It was originally promised (in writing) for 6-8 weeks from May 10, then it was changed to 10-12 weeks and then to 17 weeks. It was supposed to be delivered by Aug 18, then Ford Corp wrote to me stating that the car would be with me on Aug 24...no joy!

The car was built and it's sitting been in the CSX Twin Oaks yard since Aug 4.

MY DEALER CANNOT TELL ME WHEN I"LL GET MY CAR!

Ford corporate WILL NOT HELP...this is a $55k purchase!

APPALLING CUSTOMER SERVICE
I think you may need to wait a bit longer to see that your posts are actually being posted.

Mine was a factory order and took from Feb 23 until May 27th. You have to remember that there are many factors that affect when build and delivery take place. The first that will block your order from getting a VIN is allocation. Each dealer has a certain allocation for certain car types controlled by Ford corporate, and they cannot get a VIN for new cars until they have allocation for that type of car. This is what held mine up initially for over a month. This is not in the control of the dealer and they cannot tell you when they will get allocation because they do not know. Outside of custom orders, they have little control over what they get. They can ask, but Ford will deliver what they do. After that there are many other factors mainly around how the schedule and manage their supply chain. Then there are inspections (where excursions that they have to fix can be identified, for example our Fusion was held for over 2 months while the factory inspected and hand replaced headlights that came from a bad supplier from a 2 week factory run). Then there is shipping which happens first by train, then by truck, where the car can be held for an undetermined amount of time depending on truck availability, train schedules, and so forth.

My own interpretation is that your view of how good or bad the custom order process is depends on your personal expectations. If you are expecting to get pampered, special treatment then you will be disappointed. If you are expecting that the 8-10 week estimate is a promise in any way (even if it is in writing) then you will be disappointed. If you are expecting to have daily or hourly updates then you will be disappointed. If you are expecting that your car will show up eventually, will be inspected to a reasonable amount to ensure your (best chance at) satisfaction, and will be an awesome performer worth waiting for then you will probably NOT be disappointed.

Remember that Ford sells something like 2 million cars in a single year worldwide. Your individual $55k purchase, while it is extremely important to YOU, is a drop in the bucket for the company as a whole. They are a volume seller, not a boutique company.

One other point for consideration, my cousin and her husband were selected to purchase one of only 1000 Ford GTs, a $500k car. They were selected last summer and just received their car at the beginning of this summer, almost a full year wait. Be patient, at the end your car will be worth it unless your impatience ruins it for you.

All the best!

Thanks for the response and the wise words. I was never expecting "white glove" service but I told the dealer that I had been burned before and that I was only placing the order with them on the understanding that I wouldn't have to wait months and months for my car. This isn't just impatience. I have a trade-in that is depreciating by the week and, to keep the miles down and to avoid getting the car damaged, my existing GT Vert has been sitting in my garage unused, except for emergencies. The dealership blew all colors of smoke up my ass about Ford pledging to get the verts out in the summer...clearly that was BS.

The issue is that the car has been built but it's sitting in the CSX facility in Twin Oaks. Ford corporate informed me in writing that I'd have the car by August 24th however, my dealer, who told me that the car would be with me by Aug 18, told me last Monday that there is a problem with CSX and they now have no idea when the car will be delivered. Nobody can/will tell me what the problem is. Ford Corporate punt to the dealer and the dealer says that they are at the mercy of Ford Corp and their local rep.

It's not a case of being pampered, it's a case of respectful customer service. I want real dates and I want Ford and the dealer to stick to their agreements. Of course, if there is a Force Majeur, like the recent fire at the components factory in Detroit, then I'd understand and be patient. But to be told that we're not delivering it as promised and we're not going to tell you when it will be delivered or why it's been delayed is just unprofessional

Re the Ford GT, I can understand why they are on a long waitlist because they are individually hand-built and in no way part of Ford's regular production cycle. If I could afford a Ford GT then I'd fully expect a long wait time!
