Those are excellent choices for tires. I have the 4S on my Mach 1 and they handle really well as long as its reasonably warm. As for size, you are kinda limited by the wheels (width mainly), but the 4 s in factory size (255 40 and 275 40 19) handle really well. Not really advised to go much wider on those wheels.

I've had both (assuming you are shopping the extremecontact pros) , though on different cars so take it for what it's worth. Can't go wrong with either and if you are regularly exceeding the grip of either on public roads i tip my hat to you.

The contis are a bit more compliant and comfortable, the michies have a stiffer sidewall which makes the steering extra crispy. I prefer the latter but it depends on what you're prioritizing

I have 275/40 PS4S all around and think its a good balance of grip, width and weight

Thank you for the suggestions.
I have been reading about the advantages of the squire setup. I do have a question for the guys running the staggered factory wheels. With the front wheel being 9.5 and the rear 10.5” wide, if your running say 275/40 all around wouldn’t the diameters be different from front to back? If so how does that affect contact patch front vs rear?

If you go square, you need to get "square" wheels. Different width wheels don't play well with the same size tires. Yes, it can be done but they will either stretch or poke. Some guys get 2 more rear wheels for the front, but then you need spacers. Giant pain, would be better to get a wheel made for a square setup at that point. LMR has packages that can do that. I went staggered wheel and tire setup, but started to do square, I did mainly for the look :) and the extra rear grip.. I am still staggered now, but mine are minimal size difference at the moment (305 front 315 rear on Mach 1 HP wheels)...

Do you know the size of your wheels?
I can’t imagine they can fit those size tires?

Respectfully, I suggest you use Search to research this subject. For every question you have you will find good and consistent answers from experienced forum members.

It will be a good learning process for you to get to know issues of
  • alignment parameters
  • wheel offsets
  • clearances to strut and fender
  • max tire widths
  • longer studs and open-ended lugs
  • thick spacers up front
  • etc.
My bottom line answer to your question specifically is that you can't go wrong with a square setup of 10" rims, ~52mm offset, +1/2" longer studs up front with 1/2" thick spacers. And 285/35 Conti ECS2 tires for the win (I've had both those and PS4).

For mountain driving stick with stock sizes and get UHP all season or summer than can handle the low Morning temps like Falken FK 510. You actually want more warning on break away at the limit simply because mountain crashes are always catastrophic either into trees, off cliffs, into rock faces and bounce of the ledge, plus the roads can have dust film on them if used infrequently.

Traction loss warning is a good thing VS extreme summer which have no warning.

I would go with the Conti DWS06 before the pilot 4s. They handle better in the cold and the turn in is better.
