Hi all,

New to cars in general and I've been going through and googling all the tires in this thread. I live in VA and we general get little snowfall here but the weather drops below 35 early morning and late night.

I have the PP with summer tires and I've been spinning out on dry days. Due to this, I think I should get some winter tires. However, would driving on Blizzak when it's not snowing ruin the tires? Should I get all seasons instead?

I'm a newbie at car maintenance so any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to get a low budget set of tires to help with winter driving (not on snow, I would not drive my mustang when it's snowing if I can help it!).

Thanks!

Winter tires are not just "snow" tires. They're designed to give you the best traction in cold weather. Yes, even on dry pavement.

Where in VA are you?

I would recommend either Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires for all-season use, or the higher-performing but more expensive Michelin Pilot A/S 3. Pretty much anything will be better than the summer Pirelli PZero tires in cold weather. I had them stock on my 2011 with Brembo package and replaced them with Continental DW summer tires and I love them. I drive it every day to work in sub-freezing weather and even snow a few times(not recommended) and they work very well.

Hi Grimace,

I live in Springfield, bought mine from Koons Sterling last week. I'll look up the tires you mention after work! I'm planning on ordering all of this from tirerack, do dealerships offer to install these? I know you said good things about Tedd Britt and was wondering if they would help with ordering/installing tires.

Thanks

If you are ordering a second set of tires just for winter, you might as well get a dedicated winter tire. As mentioned above, they are not just for snow. Any of the tires mentioned thus far in this thread have decent dry pavement performance. And on the off chance you get caught and have to drive in snow, you won't have to worry about it.

Thanks foghat,

Sorry to bother you again but do you recommend getting an entire set of wheels+tires or should I just buy the tires and put them on my PP wheels?

Also would you recommend going through a local dealership to order+install or doing it through my local Merchant's tire store?

Thanks!

If you can swing it get separate wheels as well. In your case (EB PP) you could move down to an 18inch wheel and save some money there on tires (and wheels) vs. buying 19inch winter rubber for you PP wheels.

Plus, the money you save in swapping tires twice a year will pay for the wheels after a few seasons.

I would probably move to something in a 245 width. Dealer is convenient as the wheels/tires will be on the wheels when you pickup. But probably pricier. Will have to looking into pricing yourself.

I bought the wheels and tires online. Bringing them to my dealer a couple days before pickup so they can mount tires and put on my car.

Should just be a light. I suspect there are going to be a lot of winter setups without tpms sensors this year.

I live less than a mile from Koons Sterling and I work in Tyson's. I have no doubt any local dealer will gladly swap your tires at reasonable prices. Get a quote on tires from either TireRack.com, Discounttiredirect.com, Tirebuyer.com, and your local dealer plus install. Shoot me a PM and I'll see if I can beat their prices with my employee discount(I work at a Benz dealer).
