In the past my father has turned 1:18 models into their real counter parts. I tried my hand at it as this I the first vehicle I've had that has a similar model.

Some tear down and paint earlier and a few drinks now:

How many coats you use? Wet sand w/ 1200 or so and buff will get rid of a lot of that orange peel if it's thick enough...

I owned a business for 10 years that specialized in this, creating custom diecast replicas for peoples real cars. Use some Krylon clear if you can't shoot actual automotive clear with an airbrush gun, then wetsand with either 1500 or 2000 (I used 2000 but the AB gun allowed me to lay the clear very smooth) as it will be easier to hand polish the finish to a nice deep shine. Looks great but a little more elbow grease and it will look even more awesome ! I was waiting for someone to post one they created after there own.

I may go more in depth with it sometime. I used British racing green as it was the closest color I could find right now.

I media blasted the white off then a light coat, a heavy coat, baked it, heavy coat, and baked again.

How did you get it apart to paint the body?

I took a glance at one of mine and it appeared to be more involved than just removing the two visible screws on the bottom.....

There are two screws under the mufflers, four for the front and rear suspension, and one in the middle. Pretty much everything else snaps apart. Getting the dash/steering system back together is the hardest part.

The rear trunk panel is riveted to the trunk so its gotta be drilled off and glued back on. Some pegs broke on the rear quarter windows and package tray so a dab of hidden glue and its good to go.
