Folks - my first post here and I hope folks don't think I am being obnoxious. I am curious to see how a drag race between a GT500 and the new BMW M5 Competition package go. Any ideas, thoughts?

Thank you.

Welcome aboard and since your in the special group club area that’s a loaded question. The GT500 always wins no matter what anyone else says since it’s fake news if she doesn’t win:sunglasses:. Curious what’s your ride and always welcome to share your opinions here as long is it’s about the GT500. Just being silly here and I’m curious as well and I’m sure someone will eventually do the dual.

Welcome, loaded question so many variables Track Prep, Tires, Mods standing start, roll racing....... In my years if there is one thing I have learned is that there is always someone faster and better then the car you have. A lot of us bleed ford blue here so we obviously have a tainted opinion. From my 13 heavily modded Mustang the GT500 is a lot faster all the way around, I went down about 150HP but make no mistake the GT500 is faster. I believe it has to do with the new engineering as well as the DCT, everyone was a little skeptical of the DCT but it's absolutely amazing and makes all the difference.

:) My ride is a M5 Comp - unfortunately I am a BMW fan boi but I love all good cars. I was driving next to a GT500 the other day on the massive Dallas front roads and the thing sounded so gorgeous. It was a matte grey color and the car was just beautiful. We stopped at the light, gave each other thumbs ups and then continued on with our lives. That got me thinking how my car would do against the GT.

Based strictly on the power and weight between both cars (M5 comp @ 617 HP weighing in @ 4370), I would say the GT500 has a clear advantage.

What SnakeBite wrote. The power to weight advantage goes to the GT500. The same goes for when the GT500 ran the C7 zr1 Vette. The Vette has the weight advantage, so the GT500 though close, loss those races.

Will it make a difference that the M5 has all wheel drive so it may get a jump at the start but then gets reigned in?

AWD on the BWM would help for sure out of the hole. drivers race most likely.

M5 will win 0-60 no doubt, I have seen 2.8 sec on the m5. 1/4 mile will be close, on a prepared strip the GT500 will probably be quicker most on the time. On the street probably not. I saw R&T got a 10.8 in the m5. M5 is a cool car but not cheap. The m5 comp starts at I believe $110,000. Once dodge brings out their hellcat redeye Charger we will see some fun races.

Read this MotorAuthority article which states the HP numbers are higher than advertised. They believe this is a 700HP plus car due to the RWHP ratings and this thing is supper fast to 0-60. The 1/4 mile is where the GT500 would take it and as far as back roads thats another story but with AWD thats huge confidence driving. At the end of the day its a 4 door sedan which I think the better comparison is to use the Hellcat Dodge Charger which I own as well. That would be the true head to head fun but the Charger would only be good for the straight line not the back roads LOL>. https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1123082_the-bmw-m5-competition-is-more-powerful-than-advertised

The poor m5 comp is limited to 156 top speed. The 2015-2019 charger hellcat could do 204 mph. Heck a mustang GT can go what 160+? Not hating on your m5 but that seems like an early cut off on your top speed.

Instead of dealing with forum hypotheticals, why didn't you have a go with the 500?

IceAge - your grey Mustang is just gorgeous. It is absolutely beautiful. I am a middle aged fogey that has never tracked my car but it sure would be nice to see a comparison between the M and the GT. I think I have seen comparisons with the Hellcat which is just a savage.

I did read the article where BMW was sandbagging the power at the wheels on the M. The thing is really really fast. I used to have the previous generation (rear wheel drive) and I could never punch it because I felt like I would lose control.

Worth considering that the speed is only governed on the U.S. spec versions of the M5.

BMW has a $2,500 option to take the top speed to 189 on US models; needless to say I didn't go for it. However, some people have completely flashed / tune their engine management system to remove the limiter.
