Mine pings with anything less than premium. My '15 did the same thing. I don't want to have to use premium all the time, but I'd rather pay the little extra than worry about more serious problems.

Thanks, y'all!"Do not be concerned if the engine sometimes knocks lightly. However, if the engine knocks heavily while using fuel with the recommended octane rating, contact an authorized dealer to prevent any engine damage".
Well if you drive through AZ the Arco gas is all yours. Knock yourself out.Actually ARCO is BP Petroleum and they are a very good gas. If you buy fuel in California they are all the same blend other than the mix of detergents that are put in the fuel.
A few years back they got sued for not having the actual claimed octane at a couple of their stations, and this was quickly rectified.
I run mainly Chevron fuel and I still get an occasional light ping on initial throttle input every once in a while and I run 94 octane in my car with a mix of 91, 2 gallons of E85 and 2 gallons of VP101. In California we are lucky our E85 is true E85 pushing 105 octane.

Maybe.I never hear pinging on 87 octane in my 2017. Seems to me like something is wrong. Does your car burn any oil? Oil vapors will cause pinging.
Very unlikely. Gen. 3 motors have both direct & port injection. No reports of carbon buildup in the four years they have been out.Hmm... being that your Coyote is direct injected, that might be part of the issue. Maybe it's getting full of carbon deposits.
Its very rare if mine does it...no codes at all.
Wow. You must be the only person who moved from AZ to Cali and not vise versa...Grew up and raised in Mesa then Phoenix...

A bad knock sensor can be a cause of that. Easy/light throttle hardly any load, kind of points at that. And can be picked up as a code.
Yeah, when I moved to California was in the late '80s after the US Army. California was a completely different state back then than it is now.Wow. You must be the only person who moved from AZ to Cali and not vise versa...![]()
Thanks, dude! I read your post this morning and remembered I have a OBDII reader. I checked, but no codes. Unless you meant Forscan. I don't have all that.
I dunno. I guess I will just ask the service guys about it. I just hate the idea of driving a rental Kia Rio for a month or whatever.
Strange. My stock '20 GT has no such issues at all, even when I ran 87 octane regular during my break-in period (since I didn't punch it very much to redline for the first couple thousand miles). I now run 92 all the time (what a difference it makes in performance in terms of very obvious difference in acceleration times). I would think that with 4 knock sensors the PCM would pick up any early signs of detonation long before it would become audible. Perhaps you should see if there's an update for the PCM that might address that issue. My bone stock 20 with 8k does the same thing. I've tried a few different gas stations and have had success with Exxon. Any other stations and it will ping when I roll lightly on the throttle or under a heavy load. It only happens briefly just like yours. I don't have the "tick" so it's definitely a ping.
