I too was worried about how heavy the s04 was but after speaking to people I highly respect who do this for a living they called me all sorts of profanities jokingly questioned my intelligence then proceeded to suggest I lose weight , stop wearing clothes when driving and never fill up my gas tank over half way. Lol
Essentially they were getting at is that when you have 435hp and at least 3800-4000 lbs of mass, driver included, that 10-50-100 lbs makes barely any difference even at the holy grail of places, the sling areas so forget it and get the s04. $1100 for all 4 installed gives you money for other upgrades, even new rims for the $$$ saved. But again I've never driven mpss
but when you spend money to get lighter wheels, and negate the weight-loss with heavy tires, it sucks.

5lbs of unsprung weight on the outer edge of your wheel/tire will be a noticeable difference.

Also, the added weight is to the outside of the wheel/tire mass. Minor decrease in acceleration.

Paul is on the money... super grip vs. everyday driveability. Truthfully answer that question, and you've made the right choice for YOU.

Best of Luck either way.
That is all...

If you want a perfect example of how beneficial unsprung weight reduction is just look at the GT350/GT350R cars, same power and the R is a good bit faster even in a straight line.

Every pound you can cut out of unsprung weight is hugely beneficial. My old new edge I saved over 150lbs of it in wheels/tires, brakes and aluminum driveshaft upgrades, the difference in the cars performance was substantial.

less hp more weight matters , and vice versa. My car had its best 60 time with a passanger multiples times, tested, because the increase weight decreased acceleration which increased grip , so grip > weight in most cases. Obviously you can be picky and argue with me for no reason just like complaining when people say no replacement for displacement, its not an all encompassing peice of knowledge but a truthful blunt statement.
The gt350/350r the difference is rubber grip. wideness, no A/C so a few extra hp too. not just rotational mass. 20 lbs of added rotional mass even on 20inch rims does NOTHING. All in your mind. Feels like adding 30 lbs. HP > weight , Grip > tire weight.

Not gonna fight here, but if 10-50 lbs bothers you then you bought the wrong car.

150 lbs for a 250hp car is like 300lbs for 435 roughly, so yeah i would hope there is a difference lol.

Thanks for all the good discussion, keep it up. With the minimal grip difference in both, would you think the weight is more of a factor?

Sidewall stiffness is also a concern. I'd prefer it to be stiffer so that's another nod to the re11

to make it easy for ya

Best summer tire ever according to the internet: MPSS
Best dry grip for a non r tire according to the internet : RE-11 / NT05
Best tire EVER for the price, also really fning good for any price, and the only tire on the list I can vouch for: S04

Horsepower is an easy word for non engineers here for work over set amount of time, meaning 500 hp does twice the work as 250 hp over same amount of time. So when you have higher amount of hp , your car can do more work over x amount of time, so if grip difference is marginal then lighter is better , now is weight marginal, oh yeah you bet. on 20 inch rims and 27.6 diameter tires, which is pretty big it has a 1.4 weight multiplier , meaning ONLY under heavy accerlation the added 20 lbs feels like 28 lbs. now when you consider 3900lbs(3700+driver+other crap) with 435 horses (assuming stock) probably more honestly, can get you to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, then idk how marginally adding .7% or .007 increase in weight could affect anything. Grip is what makes you quick. R radial on these cars can drop your 1/4 by a whole second. So is spending $2000 for a set of tires worth it in order to get the best tires? yes of course, now is spending additional money on lighter tires in order to obtain some kind of noticable difference in performance worth it? no, i mean simply that if your motive behind spending extra $$$ is for the weight savings to equate to performance gains than imo you are dead wrong. Now if you want the mpss for safety/longevity or some other arguably justifieable reason like extra grip then yes its worth it, but just throw out the idea of a couple pounds killing your power lol.

Lol, I get what you're saying. Everything I've read says the two are really close. S04s are good but not really in the same league. The re71r is the new king if grip btw. An absolutely ridiculous tire. Would love to run it but I would like my tires to last me a year, not half of one lol. Pretty sure I'm set on the 11s.

Looks like the mpss' might actually have the edge in grip. At least in any comparison test I've seen. One direct comparison and the pss was just a hair faster. Most comparisons of the mpss against other tires the re11 has been compared to, show the pss doing marginally better than the 11 did against the same tires.

The direct comparison did say the 11s are more predictable and easier to feel the limits. Something I really want in my tire. At least with me still feeling I need to learn my car more. I'll get the 11s this go around, I'm sure I'll own mpss sometime in the future. I'll update when that time comes

Paul if you're reading this can ya pm me a quote on a set?

I've been running the mpss for about 22k miles now and love them. That includes both drag racing and several open track events. Being new to open track I can say I didn't experience any issues with unpredictability. They let you know when they are nearing their limits well before they are there.

Everyone says MPSS are great for everything, and that's most likely true. However, I have my limits too, and I don't see the point in spending over $300 per tire when I can get similar performance for less! Bridgestones (S04 or RE-11) will be the way to go for me.

This chart is for 285/35r19

Cloak,

You can't compare tires from different categories using the TireRack compare tool. For example notice how the DW scores lower than the DWS in the dry:
85ynmik.png

Since the DW is a summer tire, it should out perform the DWS which is a all-season.

I even emailed TireRack about RE11 vs MPSS since the rankings of MPSS are higher than RE11. I was told the RE11 should outperform the MPSS. I was assured the rankings posted on TireRack are relative to the tire's category.

The RE11 is a extreme performance summer tire and the MPSS is a max performance summer tire.
