Forgive my ignorance if this should have an obvious answer, but I couldn't easily find one, and the 2015 GT is going to be my first ever manual transmission car.

I'm wondering if the 6MT on the GT is going to have the kind of downshift protection that I know is on at least some modern manuals. If I'm on the freeway doing 75 mph, will the car let my n00b @$$ accidentally shift into 2nd gear and destroy my engine? Or will it deny the shift?

It will have a Rev limiter to protect the engine. I am not sure if there are any other safety features.

Unfortunately, a rev-limiter does absolutely nothing for preventing over-rev on down shifts. The limiter only keeps you from over-reving on acceleration.

Right. Cutting throttle isn't going to do jack when you're going 75mph and slam it into a 4:1 ratio, that engine's going to go plaid.

Back when I was 18, I did that in a 1995 Z28 I had. I was nailing it getting on the interstate and accidentally slammed it back into second instead of fourth. I seem to remember the rear tires just locking up hard, because obviously I was going too fast for the rpm/gear. It only lasted a second before I pulled it back out and put it into a proper gear. Nothing really happened though... but I did go through three clutches in less than two years. :)

Yeah, if you're lucky, the tires will give up the grip before the rear end or engine drop out the bottom of the car. For street tires, the tires will generally be the weak link. If you do that with racing slicks, not so much.

Every now and again, I WAY over-rev my StockMoto engine on my kart by dropping down to 2nd way too soon. Slightly more forgiving on a two-stroke though, but still not good for it.

Damn... So I guess that's a no. My best option is to just "be careful", heh.

I do plan on tracking the car eventually (once I get more comfortable with the xmission and the car's limits), so the idea of a moneyshift on the track is certainly a little scary... but maybe I'm exaggerating the likelihood.

But I probably won't be putting racing slicks on this car. Maybe when I get the Z51 Stingray I've been been lusting after, heh.

had a 350z do a 5 to 2nd shift, right in front of me in turn 1 at roebling road. ~125 mph. rears locked up car pivoted to the right and spun to the inside of the track. startled me as i was about 30ft behind when it happened.

talked to the driver later to find out what happened. and found out it was a wrong shift. seems it scarred the crap out of him..

I know this is probably not what you want to hear But when I was going to school I was watching this race between a gto and a celica. Well the guy in a Toyota Celica accidentally hit second instead of forth, yea he left a trail of debris when the engine grenaded.
Rear wheel drive is far more forgiving and will just lock up or chirp and human instinct is to push in the clutch. I remembered I did it with my old Subaru a few times during rally X events but I always seemed to hit the clutch before anything happened.

When I was still driving my first car **Insert old man story telling music**(a 1979 2.1 4 cylinder Volvo 4 door :headbang:) I would do that regularly, on purpose. We referred to it as a compression skid. Was a great way to scrub off speed without touching the brakes. :D That car had skinny no grip tires. New Mustang will react differently.
But I was 16-17, drove like the biggest moron ever, and am not exaggerating at all when I say there's no logical reason that I'm still alive.

If you do it on accident, you'll feel it before you completely release the clutch. Hopefully you'll be quick and push the clutch back in.

But as mentioned above, I wouldn't worry about it. Probably not going to happen.

Dow I haven't driven the 5.0 6 speed and I have the hurst com short throu shifter. When comming off the interstate and down shifting. It doesn't go into 2 verre easy till I slow down. Yes it will go but you won't get it there by accident.
