Looking to get some gains out of my car and I know long tubes are the most efficient but I'm in California and I'm trying to stay as legal as possible. So I'm wondering if anyone has mid length headers installed? Is there a noticeable power gain? How much louder did the car get? Does it pass smog?

By far best bang for your buck is tuning for e85 and in Cali you guys have high quality e. Just something to consider.

That's something I will be doing for sure in the future just trying to dial in all my bolt ons before I tune so I don't have to retune multiple times.

That's like asking, "how do you get a little bit pregnant". Whether it's a mid length or full length it will be in violation of CA law. Won't make a difference if all readiness codes show ready, still in violation.

I don't think there are mid length headers for our cars. It's either shorties or long tubes. I've done a lot of research, and based on my research I don't think the shorty headers will add more than a few hp peak to peak. The stock exhaust manifolds are 4-2-1 short headers to begin with; so the aftermarket shorty gains are only due to 4-1 collector and slightly bigger diameter. Very minimal, TBH. Plus, you have to cut the stock driver side exhaust down pipe to cut the catpipe off, and then weld the shorty header onto the cat pipe. That process requires installing the shorty header, lining up the catpipe, tack welding, then pulling it off to fully weld, then reinstalling the header again. Something that pretty much has to be done at an exhaust shop. You'd get more gains by sending your OEM throttle body and intake manifold to Bret Barber at Airflow solutions for porting (or buying them outright from Bret and then selling your OEM parts). I combined those two ported OEM parts (sent mine in to be ported) with the K&N 63-2605 intake and Borla S-type catback w/ Borla H-pipe resonator (in place of the X-pipe that comes w/ the kit) and saw very good gains. Plus with the resonator the exhaust isn't much louder than stock, and probably quieter at cruise, to be honest. Slightly louder under acceleration, slightly quieter at cruise. Can't beat that. I can't imagine the ported parts or Borla exhaust would affect your CARB, but I'm not in Cali so I am not sure on that.

Here's my thread on my mods: See post #27 for the latest acceleration logs:

Yea with the JBAs you have to cutoff the OEM cats and reweld them. The effort just isn't worth it. My point is you are already illegal for going with a mid length or a full length header. If you are going to do it might as well do the full length. To be frank I would consider the JBA's but I wouldn't weld the OEM cat back on. I would go with a 300cpi greencat or something of that ilk.
I would just do the MAC cat deletes if thats the case and weld on a better cat.
