Yeah you will have to compromise somewhere. The PS 4S is about as good of a tire you can get for a mix of handling and straight runs. I run 315's in the back. I like the staggered set up looks wise and because my priority is straight line performance for this car. My only mods are a JLT intake, cat back and a Lund tune and I have to be careful on the throttle starting from a stop light whereas on my 305 Mickey Thompsons, on a warm day, I can pretty much just dump the clutch WOT and go with minimal tire spin but that's basically all they're good for.

Not sure what your definition of handling is but the Mustang is a front heavy understeering pig, even more so with the added weight of a sc on the front
You tires combination and sizes make it even worst
You need at a minimum a squared setup with same size in front that in the back
Either a cheap and easy 285 on10 or a better 305 on 11

Tires first. Plenty of guys out there going low 10's supercharged with drag radials and some suspension bushings

I have no personal experience other than recently buying and currently running PS 4S's. From my research which consisted of dozens of forums and YouTube videos, there is little to no difference between the Cup2 and the 4S (I went specifically with the STAR marked ones as they have a compound similar to the Cup2) for our cars. Some even said that the PS 4S* outperformed the Cup2 on the track. 🤔. So I decided on the 4S's as my "handling/daily" set up but the straight line grip is nowhere near the MT ET Street S/S I have on the other wheels.
On dry pavement, there is a noticeable difference in lateral grip between the SC2’s and the PS4S’s (the hotter the bigger difference). Straight line grip to me is closer between the two. I agree, neither will match a dr for straight line grip, but I’ve never had a dr that felt safe in the curves.

If you like the curves, just stick with the PS4S’s all around. The SC2’s will wear you out on the highway if you run them up front. They’re at best a 7,500 mile tire, and you won’t see enough improved straight line improvement to be worth it.

What offset are your wheels with the 315s? Do you need spacers?

I have Forgestar F14 20x11 with a +56 offset (I haven't measured but the numbers are based on Forgestar website). No spacers needed. Great fit and does not stick out past the fenders. Car is also lowered on Eibach pro springs. Zero rubbing anywhere even with 2 people in the back seat. The tire does bulge a bit past the rim but I prefer that for those pesky curbs. Does a good job of protecting the rim. I would honestly prefer 19 inch wheels but the car came with those and I instead spent the money on some better tires and VMS drag pack wheels for my drag setup. Maybe in the future I will size down to 19" pp2 or Mach 1's for the daily.

BTW if you prefer a handling setup, definitely go with a square setup. 295's work great on all four corners even on a lowered car. If you go staggered the car will understeer like hell. I've driven a friend's GT with 295 square setup on PS 4S and the difference is HUGE on twisties compared to mine but for me its mostly straight line and I love the staggered look.

Absolutely agree. Dr's are horrible in turns and there's sway on the highway so I only wear them to drive to the strip, do my thing, and come back home. Also literally zero grip in the rain. Sketchy as hell so I would never daily them.

This is some great info thank you! I guess I have a decision to make. One other thing that's nice about a square setup is the ability to rotate the tires around.

Update:

Upon further review and introspection I have decided to give a square setup a try. I have reached out to Apex Wheels for a little advice:

  • Apex VS-5RS 19x10 ET40 with 295/35ZR19 PS4S on all four corners
  • 12mm spacers and -1.5-2 degrees of camber up front to ensure clearance
Since I prefer a handling setup it makes sense to me, and having square wheel and tires allows me to rotate all four tires to maximize tread life. Regarding straightline grip I will continue to look at suspension improvements that can help with that while not sacrificing too much in the handling department. What I'm considering is a set of minimal drop springs with a stiffer linear rate than the progressive springs I have now, and a stop-the-hop kit from Steeda. I don't expect to hook from a dig, but I'm looking for an improvement. Otherwise if I decide I want to get maximum grip for funsies then I'll look at getting a drag pack in the future.

I'll post a thread with all of my updates and thoughts on the new setup once I've installed and driven it.

If you intend to run a 295, it wiuld be better to go with an 10.5” or 11” wheel. Apex probably has one for you. 295 on a 10” is slightly pinched and you would prefer to be slightly stretched.

If you’re doing an 11-12mm spacer you’ll need extended studs and soacees anyway, so might as well go up to a 25mm spacer and 11” wheel.

That A052 I mentioned will blow the MP4S out of the water in every way except maybe longevity.

Apex does not have a 10.5" wheel :frown:

I would prefer to keep the spacer on the front as thin as possible. I'm not a fan of front poke, and I would like to keep camber within reason. I am aware of the need for extended studs though

I will certainly keep the A052 in mind. I know grassroots motorsports rates it at the top of their 200TW tier list as well.

I will keep looking at wheels as well, maybe I'll find a 19x10.5 that I like.
