So today, during an extended traffic jam, I started hearing a noise I'd call a thud coming from the rear when moving the shifter into 1st gear, before engaging the clutch. Is this what you're talking about here?

You're right, if enough of us would push the issue maybe Ford would do something. Like with the cooled seats which don't work properly. Of course, it is a major pain to take the car to the dealer and then hear WHAT WE HAVE ALL HEARD..."that's normal".

My dealer is having a "party" next week to tell us how wonderful they are and I'm thinking about going and insisting the service manager ride with me.

I can demonstrate this vividly. Get the car up to about 35 mph, hold the clutch in and shift rapidly back and forth between 3rd and 4th...it sounds like the car is about to explode. Somebody else try this and report back. I'm going to make a video and post it.
Mine makes the exact noise you said they the dealer heard it and can't fix it till cord puts out a buliten onbit

One thing that might help us is is several people went to the same dealer or went around the same time and made a cluster of reports.

Who would be down for scheduling an appointment on the same week at the same dealer if, say, we got 10 people to agree? I certainly would. If we get 9 other people to agree on a dealer and a week to make our stink, I'll drive up to anywhere along the I-95 from Boston to DC. We could organize this in several places in the country, but I think picking the same dealer and the same week (even the same day!) would really get some attention. Imagine if you got 10 people showing up with Thud problems and you were the service manager on that Saturday.

Or even choose a day that we can get cars into dealers all over the country and Canada (/na) at the same time. That ought to raise some eyebrows upstairs in the blue Oval Office

Yeah, the same day would be good. I think though, that the same dealer on the same day (in different regions) would be helpful: dealers have gotten reports of this to some degree, but they might all be individually thinking that it is a "one off" issue since they each only see one example.

If owners like us who make these forums what they are worked together in cases like this. I'm sure it can become a powerful tool. Almost 50 pages of the thud.. This deserves a look at by ford or at least.. A response from them

I'm committed to making Thud Day happen.

Let's spread the work.

Out of all the people on this forum there is no one here that knows a Ford engineer or Field rep? There is no way I believe Ford isn't aware of the noise. Someone knows exactly where it's coming from and what's causing it. If they deem it normal and can explain why, we can finally put this to bed. It just needs to come from some that knows what they're talking about. Or has literature to back it up. I think 95% of us just want a explanation of what it is and reassurance that nothing is broken and we will go on with our lives.

You guys are onto something, if my car currently wasn't on day 23 in the shop I'd be all over this.

This needs to happen.

I'm going to use the forum convention and say "tri-state area": NY, NJ, CT. I made a post in the regional section: http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/showthread.php?p=942138#post942138 . I'm reducing the number of people to just 5 because 10 appointments might be hard to schedule in one day at one location.

Four more people in the tri-state?

Where/when? I'm floating the idea of Stamford Ford in CT, but that might not be the most central for people. I think sooner than later would be best (before the nasty weather).

This could be a fun get together, folks.

Mine doesn't do this, yet. 1100 miles on. The only noise I get is when idling I push down clutch pedal and go to first or second gear and I can hear the clunk in the tranny. If I wait a few seconds before selecting a gear nothing makes noise it just slides right in. You all should not let anyone tell you that the thud is normal. You make them repair it or get lemon law or magnuson-moss act going. Let's just say that the thud may be the start of something worse such as a breakage and what happens if there's a lock up at 80 mph! You're in for a world of shit then.

Please everyone, take a minute to google "RWD shifter thud". You will find thread upon thread of people mentioning this same issue on multiple vehicle platforms.

This is an extremely complex engineering issue that is indeed a well known problem with N/S RWD oriented vehicles. Feel free to go berate your dealer and mention how OEMs have terrible quality but if you look closer, this is actually an issue you should take up with the laws of physics.

Head over to post #689 for a very high level explanation.
