The next stang I own will be manual but Ive only driven a manual a handful of times. I really dont want to buy a new stang and tear up the clutch or transmission. Looking to buy in 6-9 mos. Would it be a good idea to trade/sell my current stang which is an auto, and pick up a manual? That way Id have at least a few months to get used to it.

Do you have any friends/family that have a junk-ish car with a manual? That's usually the best way to learn.

While probably not ideal to learn on your new mustang, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Unlikely you will damage anything. Just push the clutch in if stuff isn't working out right. :)

If you can find something to practice on in the meantime, great. But not sure it would be worth the effort of having to sell 2 cars.

It might be cheaper to buy yourself a Logitech G27 sim wheel with shifter and 3 pedals and practice in a realistic sim, turning off auto clutch and autoblip. Assetto Corsa or Pcars are good titles. This will give you about 80% of the real experience. Once you have mastered the in-game shifting I wouldn't be too worried about damaging your new Stang - it'll take very little practice to transfer the skills over.

You could rent a car with manual for a few days.
It doesn't take long to learn, it's all about muscle memory and reactions. It takes longer to master but the basis is easy

not in the USA, he won't.

there are driver schools that have manual classes, however.
Why's that? Are there no manual rentals in the US?
It's not common here but some rental places will have.

I taught several people how to drive a manual in my first new car back in high school. It hurt their pride more than the car. Like one guy said - if it starts bucking just push the clutch back in. It won't take you long to get it figured out, because you'll have no other way to drive it. ;)

Hertz rents out STs, but those probably wouldn't be the best to learn on...

I'd say don't worry about it too much. The Mustang will have a beefy enough clutch to handle some abuse. Just don't drive it too hard until you've gotten very familiar with how to drive a manual hard otherwise you will burn up the clutch (I learned this the hard way a long time ago, launching the car at full throttle while riding the clutch to control wheelspin will burn it up in no time).

It won't be the easiest car to learn manual, but I've driven more difficult cars in my time.

Hardest part of driving a manual is starting on a steep hill and the new mustangs have hill assist. If you don't ride the clutch you won't hurt it. (That means after shifting don't leave your foot on the clutch) Just give it a little gas until you feel it engage then take your foot off the clutch.
