My GT has a loud ticking Valve train on cold start up .. This only happen if the car sets for 2 days ... If I start it daily it doesn't do it .. But let it set 2 days and it ticks like crazy for about 30 to 45 seconds ..

I'm thinking the it's oil drain back from the oil filter as it sets over 2 days , Causing the oil filter and or oil pump to lose its prime ..

Anyone else had this problem with there 5.0 motor ..If so did changing to a different oil filter with a better drain back valve fix the problem ?

I think I used a Motorcraft ( from Walmart ) oil filter on my last oil change , The oil was Mobil one full syn 5w20 ..

Thanks

If the Motorcraft oil filter you used was an FL-500S, then it has a silicone anti-drain back valve which is the best you can get. Yes, I would suspect the oil filter is draining back over 2+ days and causing the ticking. So if you currently have the FL-500S filter on the car, it very well could be defective.

What's the history behind the "S197 BBQ tick"?

Yes it is a Motorcraft FL-500S .. I think I'll try a Pure one filter , had really good luck with the Purolator filters in my race bikes ..They are rated very highly ...

Don't go with the Purolator ... the media has been tearing on them. Do a Google search and go to Bobistheoilguy.com for info.

I'd use a NAPA Gold or a Fram Ultra if not using the Motorcraft FL-500S.

We had a bunch of Frams destroy ZX14R motors , the paper came apart and eat the motors .. Napa are made by Wix and are very good filters ... High ratings also .. Might give that a try ..

It set for 3 days while I was changing out my clutch and it didn't do it on cold start up ... Very strange ..

The Fram Ultra is a full synthetic media - they are impressive. Gets great reviews on Bobistheoilguy.com. But yeah, NAPA Gold or WIX is good. Don't get the WIX full synthetic though, the efficiency is horrible.
