Our 2017 GT vert sounds amazing when she takes off from the line, but the drone makes cruising around town a bit unpleasant for the riders. She currently has a flowmaster x-pipe (resonator delete) and what I believe are jones flowpack mufflers (very similar to the Thrush rattlers).

The rumble and note puts a smile on my face when I hit the gas, but the drone when cruising down the road eats into my brain.

What would y'all recommend to keep the growl on acceleration but get rid of the drone? Ideally, just a muffler change if that would do the trick. But if a whole new catback is a much better option, let me hear it.

Thanks for your help!!

It's probably the mufflers. I don't have experience with that exact model but played around a lot with midpipes and mufflers on my 2018 GT, the factory center resonator tones down the rasp and volume but not the drone. I ended up with LTH Scorpion axle-backs and the factory resonator and loved them.

Drone is primarily impacted by the muffler solution/design. I would consider an axle back replacement that is designed not to drone like Corsa or AWE. Could also consider full catback so everything matches up.

The only way to kill the drone is to add a helmholtz resonator.

There's several threads on here on how to add them.

Good Luck,

Thanks for the suggestions!

The setup that is on there was modified to fit the convertible and after a closer look it may be tricky getting an axle back to fit. I believe I could make the Ford Performance by Borla resonator work. I think I'll try the $270 resonator before dropping $2000 on the catback.

I recently switched my system out for a new Corsa set up… the drone from my magnaflows ate my brain too…. Had to tone the drone… I went with the touring / sport version. Go to their website to hear all the tunes exhaust systems .

I definitely wouldn’t go that route. You will lose a lot of sound and the drone will still be there. The only real solution to keep the sound is the helmholtz resonator/j-pipe to eliminate the drone. Here are a picture of mine. I have the flow master outlaws and the drone was unbearable. Drone is 99% gone.

Yup this or changing the muffler solution itself, ie ab or cb.

Yep, the Only way to kill drone with one's current exhaust is to change the length of the exhaust to cancel the harmonic's.

There's a formula out there that shows you what length pipe to use but an approximately 2 foot long Helmholtz pipe is close enough for most S550 applications.

The section I added to my 2018 was approx 22" long.

I used a 2.5" Vibrant bullet that was taking up space in my garage but a plain pipe will work.

The drone went from ear bleed levels with those Outlaws to nearly zero. Only had drone under load.

I love the sound of my outlawish setup so I’m happy to hear this worked for you. It could be a bit tricky fitting the extra pipe with the extra framing under the vert but seems worth pursuing.

I decided to try a closed cell foam layer in the trunk/under the back seats first, if that doesn’t do the trick I’ll look into this.

Thank you!!

no problem, I went with 25” length to target 1800-2200 rpm range(it’s been a while so I might be a little off on rpm range) You could go with 2” j-pipes as they won’t take up as much room as the 2.5”. You also don’t have to use a u bend. It was just the easiest for me to buy it already mandrel bent.
