I had to go look, the FP knob is centered right between 1-2 and 3-4. That would have driven me crazy.

Mine looks pretty centered to my eyes. OP, yours looks like it might be a manufacturing defect.

As was mentioned before, there are a number of reasons to have the shift pattern displayed. Although it doesn't have to be on the shift knob. One method that was fairly common in tractors was plates. These tended to wear out over time and become useless. They are also increasingly difficult to understand when you have a two- or three-stick setup.

To the other end, shift patterns that are only on the knobs don't really explain how the gearboxes work together.

Regardless, one should never have to look at the patterns while moving.
