I'm debating on whether to have a custom exhaust built for my car. It has some benefits but it requires quite a bit of stuff to work out. One item I'm debating on are 4 exhaust tips vs 2 exhaust tips. I honestly like 4, idk why but it just looks significantly better. Though the question is does it really make a difference as far as exhaust flow?

Reason I ask this
  • Active exhaust I believe only connects on one tip on each side (2 total) and not the other (2 total unvalved). Not 100% on this. I have no desire for an active exhaust. Don't need 4 tips
  • I have seen posts where folks without active exhaust say that they show signs that only 2 tips do most of the flowing, the other sort of just sits there and looks pretty. Mine shows signs both are flowing. May need 4 tips
  • The car is staying naturally aspirated. I have no intentions of going forced induction. Single pipe out should be sufficient. Don't need 4 tips
  • 2015-17 had single tips if I recall correctly. Whereas the Gen3 Coyote is different, I don't think it is that different where it couldn't run single tips like the Gen2 Coyote. Don't need 4 tips
Seems over thinking for a minor detail but there is a pretty good reason for it. Cost, weight, and complexity (which goes back to cost) are all considerations. Single inlet/dual outlet muffler has a higher weight and cost than a single inlet/single outlet muffler (not just the muffler itself but also the tips). Though the differences are relatively minor so if there is a need, it's easy to justify. If it is just cosmetic, then it becomes a personal choice.

Everything has four tips these days, or so it seems. I'd say go two and make 'em big.

I just think it’s more aesthetically pleasing to have 4.. even if it’s only utilized part of the time

I just finished my exhaust and tried single large tips. The holes on the 18+ valence were just too wide and it didn't look right. Ended up ordering tips from Steeda. Should have went with Corsa's 4" instead but oh well. Getting them to sit up higher was the hardest part. I ended up drilling new holes in the exhaust hanger and putting in a rubber isolator. Satisfied.

That sounds like alot of screwing around for almost zero benefit.

Just curious, any reason you prefer to go custom exhaust? If you had an exhaust shop make something custom out of the same materials that companies like Corsa or Stainless Works use, you would probably be looking at spending more and risk the chance the welds may fail depending on who does it.

All 3rd gen Coyotes are quad tipped but only have 2 exhaust pipes so the actual tips are just for looks. It does however take a bit of engineering to design a setup that sounds good and typically just having a custom setup made will be chancing it doesn't sound that great, especially for an NA car.

I dunno, I'm going to do the 5" CF tips with the Borla Atak from the GT500 for my Mach 1. Aside from being super expensive even with the cheaper price I found, lifetime warrany, full 3" and keeps the valence looking good with tips that fill it. Also keeping the active exhaust component which is great.

I thought about doing the custom route with a 3" in/out center section then reducing the size past the resonator to mate up with the stock axleback on the Mach 1 since it's really good but I think I'd rather leave it in stock form if I need it again or could possibly sell it. We'll see.

I agree with you. I honestly like my LTH exhaust. But I'm not using materials they use.
