I know coyotes are noisy engines, i also know that the typewriter tick is "normal " but my engine sounds like its got a knock when its cold . (video below) The video sounds like a knock, if you pop the hood you almost hear a chirping noise too. Does anyone elses gen 3 coyote make these noises? Its got 6700 miles on it.

It sounds like the 'tick' to me. Have heard many engines sound even worse than that, and they're still considered normal. The tick is reportedly louder when engine is cold, so nothing strange there. But also prevalent at idle when hot, and not rhythmic. But you could take it to a dealer if you want, and see what they say. Good luck.

Unless codes are thrown, dealer wont do anything for you except maybe a door ding or 2 when they pull your car into the maintenance bay and back.

That sounds consistent. The tick doesn't have a steady rhythm to it. Have cold starts always been that loud or did this just start?

Honestly , not sure, ive had the car a year and ive put 5k miles on it since the break in. A couple months back they replaced the clutch and didnt do it right so the engine wasnt sitting on the motor mounts correctly, and it sounded off. They just recently got it sitting right again.

Gotcha. Its really hard to get a good listen with sound clips, that's why I asked. I've seen a few that sounded like bad diesel engines but yours doesn't sound that bad. Hard to tell if its normal cold start being exaggerated by the phone mic or what. These engines are loud by nature. Variable cams, timing chains, direct injection. My rule of thumb is if the ticking noises are consistent, its probably normal valvetrain operation. Especially if the car is running good. These engines are usually pretty strong but they do make enough noises to make you question it from time to time!

I am fairly paranoid about engine noises. My general rule of thumb is if the noise goes away when hot, ignore it. Its hard to do that on this car because i honestly dont drive it enough to really know whats normal for it and not.

Car has been to the dealer 3 times in the last 6 months.Im kind of tired of them having my car more than I do. Besides that its tuned, so if the engine is crap , the likely hood of them fixing it isnt high.

May I ask what happened to it, and how it progressed? Did you notice an issue since new? Curious about that, since it's rare to hear that.

As far as engine noises, I'm also paranoid, especially about noises that shouldn't be there, like the infamous 'tick', which sounds like the engine is about to throw a rod out of the block. Your engine is one of the noisiest I've heard, but I still think it sounds like normal valvetrain noises. May I also ask you what kind of oil you put in there? The main problem with these cars that I didn't know is they have an artificially low oil pressure at low revs and idle, so even if you switch to x/30oil (which I did, with 0/30 yesterday), with the super low oil pressure, it's hard to imagine the valvetrain is getting lubed properly. The oil pressure control is in the unit that holds the oil filter. Some folks have removed it with a FP equivalent. You might be a good candidate for that. My car is one of the quietest I've heard... but I only have 1,1xx miles, so we'll see. Yesterday, I didn't hear any 'tick' after I idled the engine for about 10 minutes (while putting the car off the ramps in front, and putting it in the ramps at the rear), but might be too early to tell. And there's a chance it might happen at the second oil change, so not out of the woods by any means.

FInally, the immediate fix (which I wouldn't like to do), is to add Ceratec to the oil. You could do that, and see how you like it. If it's something more serious, like rod knock, it shouldn't go away. Not sure what that thing does to the oil, to be honest. Wish somebody did an oil analysis with and without that thing, to compare. At least for now, I don't need it :). Good luck.

Mine does the same thing. Goes away when warm its normal. I've seen 4 gen 3 cars do the same, and they are all fine. One has a Whipple and makes 790whp and has 25k miles. Not one issue
