Is this amount of oil usage normal?

20,798 miles on the 2018 GT as of today. I did the last oil change at 17,092 with Pennzoil UP 5W-20 and I filled up with 10.5 quarts to be at the top of the hash marks on the oil dip stick. Checked the oil this morning and it was about half way down from the top of the hash marks. Is this amount of consumption normal? I do not have a catch can and this is a DD so it sits in bumper to bumper traffic. I push it around back roads once every two weeks for 10-15 minutes but that's about it.

Did you check the oil under the same circumstances? Hot vs cold, on a hill vs not.
Also, I think I've seen your car around Fairfax!

I am sure you have! This car is usually around the Fair Lakes area (work) even though I live in Manassas. You might see the wife driving it at times too but please do say hi if we run into each other! Cheers

I live around Fair Lakes so I've definitely seen that car. If I do wave at you, it'll be from a Purple Dodge Charger haha.

I'm not sure how much oil halfway down indicates for the newest Mustang, but on my 2016 that was about half a quart. Just add it and see how much oil that really is. Losing half a quart wouldn't be anything to worry about.

I was under the impression that it holds 10 quarts. Is it 10.5?
Hard to say how much you used but best guess is half quart or so. A catch can might be a good idea for you.
.5 quarts in 3500 miles is less than others have posted here.

@Jetnoise it is 10 quarts. When I put in the recommended amount, the oil is in the middle of the hash marks so I topped it off by adding another half quart to have it at the top of the hash marks. Makes it simple to keep track of usage etc.

Thats good to know this is not abnormal. This car is my first V8 high performance engine and I was not sure what is acceptable usage for the Gen 3 Coyote. I will be getting a catch can for sure. Thanks.

I'd say .5 quarts for ~4000 miles is perfectly normal for a high revving V8. The GT350 guys would kill for that little oil consumption haha

So 1/2 quart in 20798-17092 = 3706 miles (or 1 qt per 7412 miles) . I'd say that is completely normal - probably better than normal. My 2015 GT does about 1 qt per 5000 miles.

According to the owners manual you're supposed to check oI'll level 15 minutes after shut off at operating temp.

Screw the manual ... it's much easier and more consistent to check the oil level cold. It's exactly 1 quart between the bottom and top of the hashed area on the dipstick.

Note - the level should not be over the top of the hashed area when cold. If the level is right at the top of the hashed area when cold, then it will be at the top hole when hot. Yeah, it's not in the manual ... but it's true as I've verified it many times. Oil expands when it gets hot, just like any other fluid on earth.

I'd say get a JLT oil separator if you like to occasionally push it around. Takes 60 seconds to install and looks high end OEM.

I'm only at 11,000 miles but I dump my oil separator about every 1000 miles. I'd say there is usually about 1/2 to one shot glass in there every dump. I have not noticed oil loss at the dipstick yet, even with the collected oil.

My last OLM tripped at 7,000 miles and I changed first out at 3,000 miles with the same oil you use.

By the way, did you get the "tick" after going to PUP 5-W20?

@michail71 l Thanks for the advice. I have been eyeing the JLT and heard good things.

I did get the tick (changed factory oil around 2700miles), but after adding Ceratec the ticking went away. I do have the 2000-2500 RPM rattle at light throttle.

At 1300 miles I was down 1.5 quarts. Also at 1300 miles I developed the loud tick and a metallic rattle when coming off light throttle when cold. I believe the fact it was down so much oil is one of the reasons the dealer shared my concern of the ticks and rattles.

I left it overnight with dealer first night, and came in following morning to start cold. Tech easily heard the issues and said specific tech needed to be scheduled.

Car has been with dealer 16 days, and they’re still running different tests Ford wants them to go through each day. So far nothing has corrected the issue. Last update was they didn’t want to release the car, as Ford has more tests they want run next week.

I am online reading a bunch of information on oil usage to see if anyone has ever gotten Ford to do anything about it.

First oil change was at 3800 and I might have gotten 7 or 8 quarts out of the car. From 3800-8400 I had to add 3 quarts so it is consuming a quart every 1500 miles or so. It's down another half or so again now at 9100. I spoke to the dealer last month about it and someone there told me a quart in 1500 is supposedly normal, but with so many owners without anything near that, I question that claim. Anyway, in order for me to have them start the oil consumption test I need to pay them for an oil change at twice what it would cost me. I plan to do that this week.

I've never had a car use so much oil - not even close.
