But VDoT did pay me the $1400 to replace the RR shock and alignment after I hit a trench left by a road crew. Talk about gov't "efficiency". First DoT had to confirm site, then pass it on to the General Contractor to look into, who then passed it onto the sub-contractor who was the one digging the hole. Took a little less than a month. Still, why does the consumer have to deal with multiple fingers in the pie and chase the bouncing ball? How about pay me from VA Treasury and then you bureaucrats can play pin-it-on-the-sub footsie at your leisure.
You got lucky getting your states DOT to pay for rias damage to your car. My grandson blew a tire and cracked a rim hitting a pothole in the road and the city told us that they are not responsible for damage as a result of poor road surfaces, even a lawyer we consulted told us the same story. Perfect example of our tax dollars not at work for our benefit.

In rush hour traddic today I hit a reese hitch with the ball facing up. It hit something under my car hard. I won't be able to look under the car till late Friday, lucky I have no oil leaks. If there is damage is this covered under comp insurance or would it fall under collision?

Thanks
You will have to make the case with the insurance company - they will have to determine if it was unavoidable. I had this happen to another car and there was no way for me to avoid hitting the debris in the road - literally sliced open my gas tank on the freeway. But it was still a debate and I have a long track record of zero claims and violations with this company/agent.

Comprehensive is for everything except collision so if it was still attached to a vehicle that you hit its collision if it was laying loose on the road it would be comprehensive.

When I hit a pot hole State Farm recorded it as a collision. It's on my LexisNexis now.

They flatly said collision, no wiggle room. Luckily it only took out the flex joint in the exhaust, which I was planning on replacing anyway.

I am obliviously mistaken as to what insurance companies consider collision versus comprehensive. I don't agree with their view but as I have said they own the country, so they make the rules unfortunately.

Yes they do own all of us. I had to deal with their crap for 32 yrs in Florida both auto and homeowners.
This came up when I fired State Farm after they raised my premium to 2k a year for my 2024
C8. No accidents, no tickets, 70 yrs old, 5,000 miles a year.
It showed on my insurance claim record as a collision with a claim amount of $4192.00.

If a deer jumps in front of me and I hit it it is comp. I'm still driving.

If the hitch had fallen off and hit my grill or windshield it is comp, since it was on the road it is collision and dings my record as an at fault incident.

I don't think it is fair but it is what it is. I have an appt to get it on a rack tomorrow.
If the deer was airborne, feet are not touching ground, then it's comp. If you hit anything that's airborne, it's comp; otherwise if you run into it it's a collision.

So if I ever hit a deer the key words need to be, the deer JUMPED into me.
Not RAN into me.
