Tricky thing inflation is. If you believe the numbers (some I do, some I’m more cautious about), inflation has definitely slowed from where it was. What most don’t understand is that doesn’t mean prices decrease. It just means the pace at which prices grow has slowed. If you want prices to actually decrease, that’s a deflationary environment and I assure you we don’t want to be in that economic environment. We just need wages to keep increasing at pace equal to or greater than (my preference personally) inflation. Unfortunately, price increases have been outpacing wage growth for a while (prior to this administration and even the last one) so there’s a bit of a hole to climb out of from that perspective.

Profits are way up on a lot of stuff. Until we stop consuming at this crazy pace, the prices will stay high. Because we are willing to pay it. Our thirst for new/used cars has dropped and so have the prices, finally.

Unfortunately, I think it will take a good recession to reset the prices of common goods.

I think price increases generally always will outpace wage growth as long as inflation persists. It’s almost comical for employers to even try to catch up, considering increased price market sensitivity and their own bureaucratic red tape. If you care about your customers and your employees alike and still want to be around, it’s a very tough time to be in business.

Did you not learn from Cheaper by the Dozen? The trick is to have at least 2 if not 3 Mustangs and that way you buy stuff in bulk from your local CJPony. It's like Costco, you spend $400 with one shopping cart but you only need to go once a month so on a weekly basis it's "cheaper".

It's not inflation it's price gouging. There are no checks in place to prevent companies from raising their prices. If it were inflation truly, wages would go up in step with the inflation.
Economics 101

The only way to dissuade them from raising prices is to stop buying/using those products & services.

Lots of businesses seem to be on some Riff Raff type of stuff like the character on the TV show Underdog (hanging people upside down by their ankles to shake all of their money from their pockets). Yes, I still pay prices that are higher than a Giraffe’s butt for what I need, but quite often it’s very clear when a business is taking advantage of someone.

My daughter just took her Golden-doodle to get groomed a couple of weeks ago and got pice gouged. Before she took her dog in, she confirmed the price for the services that she wanted and was told $150. When she went to pick up her dog, they told her that they had to cut him twice, so they charged her another $108 for a total of $258. She told them that she should have received a call from someone before they took it upon themselves to do a second cut, to see if she would have agreed to that. The groomer agreed that my daughter was correct, but still charged her the $258. What was she to do when they still had possession of her dog?

Or call the local K-9 unit and do likewise. Or call the CC Fraud department while she's standing at the counter and talk LOUDLY that they were about to get a fraudulent charge for 258 when the pre-approved charge was $150.

I feel we could all contribute to a thesis on the causes of price increases and inflation.

The simple fact of the matter is that ANY company or organization needs to do better year over year then they did before. This is the root cause behind much of the issues with the economy. Greed. There is never "enough" it always needs to be more.

Example:

YEAR #1
You have a product that you sell for $100
Your demographic / customer base is roughly 1,000,000 people

Nice, you just made $100,000,000 for YEAR 1. Everyone is happy!

YEAR #2
Uh oh! Tough times hit!
- Covid
- Layoffs
- You already sold your product to the people who wanted it so now you have to try and reinvent it and sell MORE of it to the same people (plus or minus).

That being said; your investors expect to see growth, not just dividends but appreciation. HOWEVER you still really only have a demographic of about 1,000,000 people.

Also, your board of directors are greedy and expect an 18% increase in profit margins to show growth, productivity and pay their bonuses etc.

Now you have to sell your product for $118 MINUMUM. Probably more because you need the %18 profit for your BoD + you need to compensate for an already over saturated market and customer exhaustion at your miniscule improvements (like sticking on tablet screens and calling it a new gen). If you saw Tron Legacy "and do you want to know what we changed? This year we put a 10 on the box".

YEAR #3+ - Rinse and repeat this crap over and over again because a company that isn't growing year over year is not as attractive to outside capital investment.

This ties into the wage gap as well. Wages will never keep up because it's one of the tools Boards use to keep costs down rather than pass on their greed to the price tag itself.

The simple point is; start making a list people. When the zombies come (jokes... sort of) there are a few people on the list who are no longer going to be able to hide behind walls and laws. Can't wait to watch their faces as we play "Surving the Game" with rich folks.

When I see things like a bag of potato chips for $6 when half the bag is filled with air, I get really pissed off. I still pay it because I’m addicted to potato chips but come on already.

That sucks for your daughter. Can’t stand companies that conduct business like that. If more than initially quoted is needed, they should absolutely call and discuss before proceeding. But they also know your hands are tied because they have your dog, car or {insert item here}. And you want it back so you’re forced to pay. Leaving reviews when you get an email asking to do so sometimes helps. At the very least it will help others go to that business with eyes wide open.

you're looking at it wrong. First, they used Nitrogen to fil the bag (right?) to preserve freshness. Nitrogen doesn't grow on trees, you know... And can you imagine how expensive it is to individually wrap each chip (stack) in bubble-wrap so it won't turn into crumbs? half+ empty bags are nature's way of cushioning the chips so only half to 2/3rds disintegrate into powder.
