Still think they should've made those tail lights like the concept. It looks so much better having that 3 dimensional look being separated from the trunk lid like that.

What does this have to do with the 2015 car?

2015 related or not, I've always loved those concepts. Prefer the coupe, but I'll take the 'vert.

Got a 1/18 coupe and a 1/24 'vert..............and I think those will have to suffice.

What engine is in that? It looks like a supercharged version of the 4.6L, but I'm not sure. And, was that engine really in the concept? Why would they spend money on the architecture of the engine when it's just a design concept?

I remember seeing that at Carlise PA back in 2004--but its about as useful as a 1/24 scale diecast, it can't be legally licensed or driven--it can only sit on the floor and gather dust

Good to see this car - it's an important part of the history of the Mustang.

Yes, that car and it's coupe twin are the 2005 Mustang GT concepts that preceded the reveal of the 2005 Mustang. And they are 100% drivable. They are built on a Thunderbird chassis (DEW98 - double A-arm independent suspensions all around, very highly aluminum intensive, state of the art in those days). Look at the pictiure of the under hood area and compare it to a T-Bird or Lincoln LS and you'll see everything matches. Note the shock tower (shock, not strut). As reported at the time:
- The red 'vert uses a stock T-Bird V-8 (3.9L). This is the original lo-po version of this engine, not the enhanced version that came later. The 3.9 was a slightly simplified variant of the Jaguar 4 liter (also offered in other displacements, which later evolved considerably into their current 5 liter).
- The silver coupe used a 4.6 DOHC supercharged "modular" engine, with slight improvements from the 2003-2004 engine, that was intended to be offered but was cancelled by Phil Martens along with several other planned items for the 2005 (that engine was a warranty nightmare for Ford and that figured into the cancellation) such as the IRS-equipped Cobra that later degenerated into the solid axle and iron block GT500.

According to interviews at the time and later, these were crafted without using a single body panel from the actual S197. None would fit anyway. One interview said they were farmed out, so as not to interfere with the work of the actual S197 team.

In all these years since these were shown, most people think they were superior to styling over what we actually got in 2005. And they were certainly superior in suspension dynamics thanks to DEW98 geometry... if the plan to base the Mustang on DEW98 had proceeded (it was instead dumbed-down to the S197 in order to be able to produce a 20k low-end model), it would have been on the second-gen version of that chassis (also cancelled by Ford) that presumably included several improvements including heavier-duty suspension bits and differential (the 2nd gen was slated to underpin a larger car than the LS, as well as a smaller car). Think of the DEW98 under the LS as analogous to the V35 version of the Nissan FM, and the planned update as the V36.

There are photos and videos of the GT concepts driving around Dearborn. Just about all the top execs were pictured driving it, you have to wonder what they thought of it compared to what they actually put on the market. The existence of this pair may be why they changed their concept policy in this same timeframe.

There are also photos of a photo shoot (apparently on a beach in CA) that got out to the internet just before the car went public at the Detroit show. Somebody was walking down a beach and was lucky enough to come across a photo shoot by Ford's agency.

Unfortunately all I have is a 1:24 model of the coupe... if I had the money I'd buy that concept. But I do have a 16k Lincoln LS, which with a helluva lot of cutting and welding could provide a better chassis to my 2013 Boss. Now if I only knew how to weld. :-(

This entire thread raises a big question... will we be rooked yet again next year by a concept car that has very little relationship to the production car? And given Ford's revised policy to concepts, will there be a concept at all? Would there even be any point or should Ford just get on with it in January (Detroit), February (Chicago), or April (New York)? If there is to be a concept for the Detroit show, it's under construction somewhere right now.

It was seeing these concepts, the coupe in particular, that completely wowed me, and I knew from that point I wanted "the new Mustang".

Here's the beach shot :)

As for this time around? Please Ford, if you're going to do a concept for Detroit, make it a 95% production ready one, rather like the recent BMW M4 Concept.

The red concept was shown privately at Pebble Beach Concours before the silver coupe and vert were shown publicly.
