So what do you think is actually happening? How could the tone possibly change?Hey Fionic, see my other comment above. Other than my/our ears, it seems the Ford manual backs it up.

Guess I found my new settingDirectly from the manual:
Track – Provides a performance driving
experience. The engine responds
directly to your inputs and takes on a
more powerful tone. Track mode is for
use when pure performance is desired.
A performance oriented traction
control mode is automatically utilized
when Track drive mode is selected. In
this mode, traction control intervention
is reduced and tuned specifically for
track usage only and is not intended
for public roads.
I hear ya (but unlike you do hear the sound differenceit's not like a 9th cylinder opened up or the engine expanded to 5.2l in track mode lol.
it's same sound you're just hearing it at a different time because of the throttle change
Is it possible for the driving modes change valve lift height or duration in order to maximize performance? This might change the tone of the engine.
Very well could be. Ford mentioned in press releases that it changed many engine parameters. It could be similar to the Boss track key back in the day, which also made the engine sound different for sure.Could they be doing something with the valve timing that changes the tone? Or modifying the charge motion control sensitivity? Or maybe it's just that the more aggressive throttle mapping gives the impression of a change in tone.
Definitely seems like there are parameters that could be modified that would affect the intake/exhaust note in subtle ways.

Ding ding ding....winner! The sound tube is what changes the engine sound in the cockpit. It's there for that purpose.Maybe the guys who don't hear a difference have their sound tube removed ... ??
It does change the parameters of the throttle and driver aids I know but I'm not sure besides some sort of tuning it would change in the motor.I hear ya (but unlike you do hear the sound difference). My initial thoughts were throttle mapping as well - see my first post, but it sounds different across the rpm range - less bassy and more loud (induction noise).
