My first car at 15 was a 5.0 with a T5, it was also my first manual tranny. You must have really been goofy off, you should have been able to tell you were in the wrong gear and pushed the clutch back in way before the RPMs got high enough to explode a flywheel. I really feel bad for you, having to learn that way.
Learn from the mistakes of others, life is to short to make them all yourself.

UPDATE 3: The repair is sadly not covered under warranty. They said they need to replace the entire clutch. It will cost around $1,000. They blamed the issue on me downshifting to a low gear at a high speed. Definitely my fault. Gonna make sure to never let this happen again.
I think what happened was that I shifted from 6th to neutral at around 80mph. Then I drifted until I hit 70mph, and then I tried to get back into gear and accidentally shifted into 2nd instead of 4th.

Costly mistake that will never happen again. I just need more practice.
The whole key to driving a manual transmission is to always be aware that the centering springs in the shift lever will always put the shifter in the 3-4 gear gate. Putting any side force on the lever while shifting will put you either in the 1-2 or 5-6 gear gates.

When you accidentally shifted into 2nd thinking it was 4th, you pulled the lever sideways to the left (against the centering spring) instead of just pulling it straight back with no sideways force.

It's an easy mistake to make ... but if you try to concisely think about it, and know that the lever is always trying to center itself in the 3-4 gear gate, then it's less likely to make this kind of mistake.

Well to be fair this was my first day ever driving a stick shift. The goal is to never let a novice mistake like this ever happen again.

It happens, the mustang is my 2nd manual car. My 350z was tough as hell to learn manual in but i refused to buy a auto sports car at my age.

1st week of owning my 350z i backed up onto my fence. Makes ramps for the car to get off was not easy.

So the flywheel exploded AFTER the carwash incident? And just curious how you can go from 5-6 to 1-2, like GT Pony said, you have to go left past center to even get in the area.

I shifted from 6th to neutral, drifted a bit to lose speed, and then shifted from neutral to 2nd (instead of to 4th).

I would think to mention the mis shift in the original post.
that time i rode the clutch in the car wash, or that time i dropped it into 2nd on the freeway and heard my transmission explode... i'm sure its the car wash incident for sure!

In the mid 70's I learned to drive with a four on the floor. When Dad taught me to drive he told me to always double clutch. To not do so burned up clutches. :D
Maybe for truckers and racers? My granny shifting has resulted in first clutch jobs at:
Civic 192k (fatigued pressure plate spring)
Accord 245k (still had friction material left)
The no nos are don't ride the clutch halfway, have it either in or out. And of course don't rev and dump it. Don't know if the Mustang has a chance at those mileages. Heck, I don't know if the engine will last that long, lol.

I'm having a hard time envisioning getting the car into 2nd at 70mph. There should have been a lot of resistance as the synchronizers protested this mismatch. If one actually forced it into 2nd at that speed and released the clutch, I would expect the rear tires to decelerate so quickly as to break traction and force you to either kiss the windshield or lose control of the car.

On a related clutch topic - why hasn't anyone mentioned the technique of using the hand brake to hold the car on hill? That's how I learned about the clutch's friction zone and how to drive standard (on a 1978 Toyota pickup with the handbrake under the dash). I actually find the hill hold on the Mustang a little sluggish to release, I guess all those years without the technology taught me to be quick from the brake to the gas...
