That is frickin' lame. I custom ordered so that NO-ONE could drive the damn thing except for loading/unloading and I can break in the engine properly myself. I will refuse delivery if it's got miles on it. Period.
It dose not matter if you custom order or not. My personal experience with a custom ordered 96 cobra had 235 miles on the window sticker for random testing....At first I was somewhat upset as you feel now, but as this was one of the "New" 4.6 cobra's I came to realize that it was better to have this extra testing than not. In my case the dealer dropped a couple hundred to sooth my soul a bit.

Down, Dog, easy boy. As to Brian's point, a dealer told me that they make thousands for dealer lots before they even start making custom orders. I have to think they only test the ones that aren't custom ordered, and even then I'd hope the customer would get some sort of discount on the car.
My car will be part of the dealer order. My Nephew and his GM got my order to go in as part of the dealer allocation because they figured it was an easy sell if I changed my mind. They were ordering a yellow GT anyway, and just changed the options to match what I wanted. So, even though mine is technically a custom order, it's still part of dealer allocation, which could end up screwing me in the long run.

Some custom orders get randomly chosen at the factory regularly on all types of Ford vehicles, as noted by others. A sticker documenting how many miles is posted on any of these.

Also, once the vehicle makes it to the dealership, Ford requires a Pre Delivery Inspection to validate warranty, which will require that a mechanic drive the car a few miles to bring it up to normal operating temperature. Our dealership uses a 4 mile loop, for example. A typical new car has 8-20 miles on the odometer by the time it's ready for sale. Some are a bit lower, some are more if chosen for QC at the factory.

Refusing delivery over a couple of miles is unreasonable, IMO. If you want a new car without any miles, you'll need to build it yourself.

The 2015 Model Year will run until the 2016 Models start coming out... :D

 Sorry I just couldn't resist any longer.

Have you ordered a car before and had the miles low? What do you consider low?

When I ordered my 2007 GT, it had 33 miles if I remember correctly and it was selected for quality inspection. Later in the model run, I saw instances of 4 or 5 miles for some people, corresponding to what Brian said about the pre-delivery inspection test drive.

To me, it's one thing if it had over 50 miles. If it was less, then that's within the range of acceptability.

I think the lowest I've had has been around 30 miles, but I've never ordered a car before, so that was as it sat on the lot (including my test drive). My Mom just picked up an Escape Titanium yesterday and it had 3 on the clock, and it wasn't even an order.

I would consider anything below 10 miles to be low.

I may be off the mark on engine break-in too, nowadays. I just want the maximum performance and longevity out of the motor. I've read that the best way to break in these newer motors is to beat the hell out of them right away (going against Ford's recommendations).

I'm curious if we have any engine guys around with an opinion on the matter.

I subscribe to that philosophy. I've always believed that if you baby a new car, you will get a baby. Drive it like you intend to drive it long term, right from day one.

My Taurus had 11 miles on it when I bought it. My 2011 GT/CS had 3000 on it. I bought it as new but the dealer owner's wife had driven it for 11 months. I got it at depreciated cost and still new car warranty and all.

I custom ordered my 2011 5.0 and after about 8 weeks it arrived with 71 miles on the odometer. I too was rather upset at this revalation, however after 3.5 years and 27,000 miles of ownership the only time it's been to a dealership was for the whining transmission which was replaced under warranty. No engine issues, no electrical gremlins or creaking/noisy suspension that others have complained about.

It would not bother me in the slightest if I ordered a 2015 and it arrived with a few extra miles on it, so long as the tires, brakes and clutch are all in new condition.

Same here, was practically redlining down the road in front of the dealership on the drive home. Never burned a drop of oil, whereas all the guys stressing over the 'proper break-in procedure' and babying the car all over the place are reporting going through a quart of oil every 1,000 miles or something like that.

Yup, this is exactly what I want to do. I don't feel like my 2013 has the correct amount of power because it was babied. It doesn't leak oil, but it doesn't feel as potent as my 2011 was, even with bolt-ons.

I personally think that it's a good thing if it has been QC Tested by a Ford Trained Driver, and the Mileage has been documented for those purposes. That wouldn't bother me at all. Now if those miles were put on after Dealer Delivery by any Tom, Dick, or Harry then I'd be unhappy

My fear is my mustang being the first one to hit the lot and the dealer using it to show all the other sales reps the new features...especially line lock. And we all know how easy it is to hit the rocker panel with your shoe when getting in.

I told my rep I would take time off work when it's scheduled to be delivered and would like to be present during all post delivery inspections. If I'm there on the lot, I will be that guy watching as they lower it off the truck.

A bit of overkill? Absolutely. BUT, I know a LOT of people who work at dealerships and that's why I feel like this.

My dealership called me when my car arrived and was being unloaded, and I didn't even ask them to. Develop a relationship with your dealership and they will do what they can to retain you long term. If you don't want people all over and inside your brand new car, tell them.

Yeah my sales rep told me he'd call every few weeks to touch base, and I will stress all of that to him. Should be no issues they like me already and this will be my 2nd Mustang in as many years from them.

My 04 Mach 1 had 7 miles on it when I bought that!

When does Ford stop taking orders for '15 model years?

Like could I put in my order sometime in Feb and expect deliver around April?
