Honestly around VA I try to stay within very very close to posted speeds. The speeding laws here are unforgiving. Sure 10 maybe 15 over have your fun (I go a maximum of 7 over) but I'm talking about 150mph blasts keep that crap off public roads.

Here is an example of VA laws.

Posted speed is 55..if you do 74 you get a ticket. Pay the fine and -1 point on your license.

55 do 75. Instant reckless driving because it is 20 over. You are charged with a misdemeanor and you have the chance of instant 5 days in jail plus fine and your license will be suspended and the judge has the option to revoke.

Now let's say you go down 66 where it speeds up to 70mph posted...you go 81..you're safe right? You just pay the ticket and get the -1 point because you're only 11 over? Wrong that is also considered reckless driving because you exceeded 80mph...

I grew up in Springfield/Burke in Fairfax County. Went to Hayfield & LakeBraddock secondary school . I always sped, everyone else speeds. I visit often and still speed. Yes, I do mostly 5-10mph over, but may exceed that sometimes.. I see plenty of people doing 70-80 on the belt line. I'm not scared of a speeding ticket. Call my lawyer and move on to next ticket.

I will say, probably due to weight, I feel more secure driving the GT at 130 then the Vette. I always felt like "lift-off" was right around the corner in all my Vettes.

If you ever been on the B-Line express way in Florida and went the speed limit you were a danger to everyone out there. Some roads are like that. Anyhoo I have only seen 90 so far.Felt like 60

As someone who has driven on that road for years, 80 is like the speed minimum.

Yeah, but how much would the fine be for going 150?

When I got caught going 89 in a 65, I had to pay... I think it was like $700 or so? If a place charges you $X for every mph over the speed limit you are, that fine could really add up.

Understood. Just remember the whole country isn't like the congested urbanized beltway you live in. There are areas where you can take it above posted limits, be the only person on the road, have visibility for miles and not have to worry about LE because there may be one officer on patrol for a whole county the size of Rhode Island. I wouldn't make any "fun runs" in your area as well. Practice what you preach. ;) :cheers:

There are 0 houses or businesses. There are no other roads that intersect. It is the middle of nowhere. It is flat so you can see down the whole stretch. If no other car is around coming or going I can do a blast and have gotten up to 130mph. On my 05 the hood started to shake violently making me back off.

But Im with others. If you recklessly speed you can minimize risk to others by picking a sensible time and place. Im not condoning it, but lets not lie to ourselves. Most of us bought a fast car to .... well drive it fast. Mine will be 1/4 mile raced and SCCA Solo run too. But there will be blasts of speeding in between. I just wont do it it traffic and in areas where others are present for the most part.

My favorite place to really let it all out: at the east end of Long Island, going out towards the Hamptons, in the wintertime. The road literally does not go anywhere; the Hamptons are a dead end unless you're planning on swimming to Europe. It's a place that's hopping in the summertime but completely dead in the wintertime; you'll see like three cars on the stretch of Sunrise Highway between Mastic and Hampton Bays.

And for really fun driving -- there's a stretch of Old Montauk Highway right at the end of the island that that runs right along the beach and contains a lot of elevation changes and has beautiful scenery -- and in the wintertime it is COMPLETELY deserted, because the beachfront houses that it runs past are only used in the summertime.

It's a three hour drive from NYC, and it's only about two miles long, but totally worth it.

Having also lived in NOVA (Annandale and Lorton areas) i'll agree that it's not uncommon to see a lot of people speed on the road in that area. But to Brent's point, is it really worth it? Who has the patience to deal with tickets and lawyers??

I'm definitely checking this out. I usually hit up the Jones Beach area during the winter months if I want to go for a drive.

I did 200+ in a Veyron in Need for Speed the other day... :0 Crashed and walked away unharmed as well...!!

I can see both sides of this one, either way no Mustang for probably 5-6 months, but as a Father of 2 and Husband, I cannot see ever going crazy. Not 22 without a care in the world anymore, would probably have killed myself at that age with a car like this. But at my more wise age it is just not worth the risk of losing my car, my income and most importantly the respect of those that care for me. But I am not the high horse type that will lecture, just be aware that things can and do happen that you cannot anticipate and that is when the Fit hits the Shan and you have to rely on sheer luck to survive it.

But then again I have done my share of driving by serious accidents involving people who had the situation under control up until the time that they did not, and I really do not want any part of that. I am sure that has shaped my opinion of the situation. A frail human body is not meant to deal with the forces of impact at 100+MPH without serious safety equipment that just does not exist in these cars, and unfortunately have happened upon such situations on the roads before which I will never be able to forget about. If I will not speed seriously because of myself and my family, will not happen just to save the innocent person who drives up after me and discovers the remains of my wreck... and let's not kid ourselves, this is not about the "you have sped at least 1MPH over so do not be a hypocrite of those that have doubled the legal speed." That is a completely false argument meant to silence any possible critics, not the same thing at all. People around you expect to encounter cars going at slightly above their own speed, but not double.

Agreed. But I think the point being made is that when out by yourself with no one else around a little exhibition of speed may be attempted if you understand the risks involved.

A point to ponder, which is morally/ethically worse? Me driving at 65 mph in a 65 mph zone in traffic then maybe once in a blue moon going out on an abandoned stretch of highway alone and no one around and running it up into triple digits OR... Someone driving 80 mph in a 65 mph zone day in and day out on the public congested highways but never taking it any faster than that? Which one is more offensive? Just a point to ponder that's all.

Several years ago, I was riding my motorcycle with a small group up Wind River Highway from Carson. At one of our rest stops, another rider walks up to me and says "you could get around those corners quicker if you move up on the tank."

I replied "you know, the only way to determine how fast I can get around a corner is to first figure out how fast I *can't* get around the corner - and that is information that I don't need to know.
