I'm not a mechanic, and probably will end up leaving it to a dealer..
But I thought I might not be the only one with this issue, and as I resolve it, someone else can come here and see what was the issue.
The car is european, an automatic, has 17 800 km / 11 000 miles on it, and I've installed Roush axle backs.

I recorded this video this morning with my OnePlus 3, a cold start, driving up from my garage. Thanks for your help!

For comparison, here is the same incline, but with a warm engine. Would a timing chain slap decrease with a warm engine?

My guess it's something loose in the resonator when cold, and after the exhaust gets warmed up it goes away. If you rev the engine up & down in neutral when it's still cold will it make the same noise?

I tried revving with a cold engine, and didn't hear the clatter. But the exhaust is quite loud.. :p When driving up the incline after just this revving, in total about a minute after startup, the clatter was almost gone. So it seems to occur only with a very cold engine.

There is a TSB out for an exhaust rattle; hopefully its that.

if not there are a few things that could be wrong internally...get it atleast documented. A guy on here by the tag of Ruby Red had something like that at the beginning; then it spun way out of control.

He no longer owns a mustang.

Did you do an engine oil change recently? If so did you notice the noise before the change?

Likely exhaust rattle but coud be piston slap/timing tensioner, both of which are not really doing any damage. It's typically not damaging if it goes away warm. What oil and weight and what filter?

Only other thought is torque converter fasteners that once it warms up the loose ones expand with the heat.

Yes to further this post do you know they put in 5w20 if not it could be a simple oil viscosity problem? Who did the change?

I also had the same sound after a oil change, after reading on other forms about the noise tried using one bottle of Lucas engine break in oil with zinc which got rid of the noise for me. I've read how others have went to a Ford dealer and they put in an XL 17 additive which also got rid of the noise but later on and it up having to replace the whole bottom end of the motor. problem is the additives with zinc are not recommended for people with stock catalytic converters as they eventually get clogged up faster. while this took care of the noise for me you could have a similar issue or it could be pulley tensioners piston slap timing chain tensioners or a series of other small things. I just did what others tried after they did an oil change because I didn't get the noise until I didn't oil change and I didn't want to risk ruining the bottom end and didn't have to worry because I don't have stock cats in

As a matter of fact, yes I did have it serviced for the first time now in the start of september at the local Ford dealership, where they did the first oil change. They added 7.6 liters of Castrol Magnatec 5W20. I did not have the noise before the change.

That's known as the infamous "BBQ Tick" if it showed up after an oil change. See if this thread holds any info that might help out. Still unknown why simply doing an oil change would cause an engine to start making loud ticking noises.

sadly, I know that sound all too well...

to me it sounds more like a guy who was going through an engine issue the same time I had mine ticking. see below:

http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21895

I dont think his happened after an oil change, but listening to yours get worse as the RPMs ascend doesnt scream BBQ tick to me. Mine was completely random whereas yours seems to mirror RPMS.

Read them both though...very useful

Thanks for all replies. The car is at the dealer, so I'm awaiting judgement while driving around in the Focus loaner..
My assumption is they will claim nothing is wrong.
It seems from all the forum threads on ticking from the V8 that it's more or less normal and not harmful..?
