So... How do you get ice off the windshield?
He is throws hot water on the windshield. A young lady tried that in our area - but only one time.

One cracked windshield later...

But seriously, if you just wait for the interior defroster to melt the ice... You could have your car sitting there idling for hours.

It really doesn't take all that long, maybe four or five minutes, which also lets the engine warm up some (and even the transmission oil warms a little). When I was working, having an almost fully warmed up car by the time I hit the stretch of road where traffic normally runs at ~60 mph that time of the morning was a good thing. Now that I'm retired, I'm almost never on anybody else's schedule for anything, so the few minutes idling is less frequent and needing to reserve those few extra minutes is much less critical when I am.

I remember Fords having the option in North America--you could see one coming because the windshield had a rose coloured look to it. If I recall from the day the insurance companys had a hand in Ford dropping the option. If you had the windshield the deductable was very high.

You've hit the nail on the head. Insurance doesn't want to pay to replace these as they are undoubtedly far more expensive than your regular windshield. Until the prices come down on these and they become more mainstream we aren't going to be seeing many of these on the roads.

Cool tech to be sure though. :)

Same can't be said for over in Europe, well I can vouch for the UK at least. Cars with this option fitted is common and the insurance don't charge extra to have these types of windscreens replaced. Tech has been out for years, ford put a patent on it, made money, patent run out and other manufacturers got involved.
