Looking at picking up a 13/14 gt500 or getting a s550 and just slapping a roush/whipple on it.
Which one is better for reliability?
If I were to go coyote, gen 2 or 3?
Either car will be purchased under 15k miles (GT500 probably under 10k).

Depends on what your wallet looks like. It always comes down to money. If you can, you will! (Peaky Blinders reference here).

You can get a new S550 for a decent price. Why buy someone else's dream? There are so many differences between the body styles that it just makes good sense to go something current.

My 2021 came with 8 km on it right from a dealership 3000km away. A year later I've got 750hp where the GT500 you are looking at is 662. That being said I've spent probably 20-25k on the vehicle on top of sticker but that is slightly less than the cost of a pre-pandemic new GT500.

Goals! The S197 wasnt bad, I loved mine and wish I hadnt sold it. However I havent driven an S550 yet so I have no comparison to give you.
If you are looking to drive a factory car with little to now modification needed, and dont mind the solid axle handling, go with the 500.
If you are looking to modify and have the 650'ish wheel range, go whipple on the 550

By the grace of god money is not a big deal at this point. How has your gen 3 held up so far, and what are you using, Whipple?

Keep in mind if you pop the GT500 motor, you are looking at $15-20K to replace.

If you pop the S550 motor, $5-7k and even less than that if you do the work yourself.
I was thinking about that...

I don't mind the live rear axle at all, I think its kind of cool even. I might be leaning towards the s550 at this point but not sure. Thanks for your reply!

I had a s197 GT500, although an iron block 07. I installed a 2014 TVS blower and she ran HARD. Made 645whp with stock pulleys, only bolt ons and mild fueling (larger injectors, no BAP). Car was A BLAST to drive. Conversations every time you take it out. Everyone had a story when they saw that car and wanted to talk to me lol

However

My current, twin turbo, s550 blows that GT500 away in every performance metric for a fraction of the cost -- however "boring" it may be as it's "just a Mustang".

Roush Phase 2. It was installed last week. I've had an issue where it stalls at stoplights sometimes (the RPMs bounce from 500-250-500-250 and then cuts out) but Ford is working with Roush to figure it out now. They believe it's the tune/programming.

I did get some seat time over the weekend and a Corvette ran up on me. The look on his face when I smacked him down like a red-headed stepchild was pretty priceless. He pulled up on me at the next stop light and asked what I had done to the car. "I added some hamsters to the wheel" and left it at that.

750hp is about as fast as I personally am comfortable guiding (does one really control anything at that level? You just sort of hang on and pray). Having been a firefighter and responded to MVCs I can tell you that this level of power is already pretty crazy for the street. What's that tiktok audio? "F around and you goin' find out?"

This is always on my mind when I think about a gt350 or gt500.

If you decide on the S550, Whipple would be and is my choice on my 2020 GT, GT350 and F150. Comparing it to the Roush is comparing the best PD supercharger available for the S550 to the least desireable option. The Whipple Iis physically larger at 3.0L of displacement compared to 2.65 so it ultimately has more power potential if you ever want push it’s limits or a built motor ever becomes part of your plan. It also has a more efficient rotor design that makes more power per pound of boost. It has a larger intercooler and better cooling system that isn’t nearly as prone to heat soak as the Roush. If I hadn’t bought Whipples, I would have gone with Edelbrock or VMP Odin long before I would ever consider Roush (I would go centrifugal before Roush) for their bigger top mounted intercooles and better cooling systems even though they share the same rotor pack as the Roush.
