Gt350 Shift Knob retrofit

I just did this and tapped it all the way through, BUT mine sits way higher than everyone else's for some reason. I've got an 8th inch gap between my reverse lockout.

I don't have any way to upload pictures. It looks similar to the OP's original picture. I made sure to take the plastic piece and rubber piece out beforehand, as well as the retaining clip for the leather cover; In case that was getting in the way at all.

Well I am the OP, and to fix the gap another poster found that if you take out the black piece that is inside the knob itself... You jusy have to make sure you tapped deep enough and just keep twisting it. That's ho I fixed it, but you get to a point where the reverse lockout doesn't work, so make sure you haven't rotated it too far on to the shift knob!

In post #83 it looks like it's twisted one time too far. I got mine to twist one more time, so now there's just a sliver of a gap that you have to stare at hardcore to see. I think it's probably good where it's at now. I still have full functionality of the reverse lockout.

Just got done drilling and tapping my GT350 shift knob. Due to the taper its not as secure in a bench vise as I'd like and theres some minor marring of the leather as a result even with wrapping it with a towel. My impact gun would spin the knob sometimes which causes the marring. I also removed the inner ring and plastic spacer that was inside the knob

Refer to post #28 to see the before which was the OEM knob with MGW shifter and MGW OEM collar. It doesnt sit as flush as the OEM since the inner diameter on the GT350 is a tad smaller.

I just held the shift knob in my hand when I drilled and tapped it.

Got my shifter installed yesterday. Came out pretty good and it sits down over the reverse collar. I had some slight difficulty in getting the hole drilled for the tap. I bought a new drill bit for this and it didn't want to drill for crap! Got it done though.

But for some reason the reverse lock sticks in the shift knob. Not completely. Like half way. So after taking the car out of reverse it doesn't just snap back down like it did with the stock knob. It slowly comes down or I have to push it back down.

Anyone else experiencing this?

[MENTION=18224]IowaPony[/MENTION] I had this happen as well. I believe it is because it is just spun too far down. Try to rotate it back up 360 degrees to see if it works now. I think it is just too far down.. At least that's what happened when It happened to me!

That's not the case, because mine isn't even spun down far enough yet. If you see the pics that I posted, it shows how far down I have it and yet it still sticks.

Did you guys remove the metal ring inside the knob? There's some pics earlier in the thread showing it. I removed that and the plastic ring and it works great.

another reason to go MGW and ditch the cheap chunk reverse pull up. Too much of a hassle
